1965 Center High Searchlight Staff...
Center's students keep up to date with what is going on around school by reading the Searchlight, the bi-monthly newspaper.

Under the supervision of Ms. Luanne Lasswell and the leadership of Bill Henry, editor-in-chief, the staff members learn how to report accurately and objectively. News covered by staff members ranges from individual academic achievement to sports, features and editorials. The paper's emphasis on broad coverage has developed "a nose for news" in all the members of this alert staff.

Wonder if any of these former 1965 Yellowjacket Golf Team members have had a hole-in-one during their lifetime??
Coach Max Hayes started the inaugural golf program at Center High School in Kansas City in 1965.

To all who attended Center South, a very beloved teacher and coach passed away last week. I really enjoyed having him for Latin. The obit is below.

Harry V. (Vick) Bland died on July 14, 2026, at age 90 in Overland Park, Kansas. He was born July 18, 1935, to Harry V. Bland Sr. and Alma Mae Williams at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Missouri.
Vick is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gail; his children, Rebecca, Claire, Christine and Rachael; his five grandchildren, Zachary, Marissa, Abbey, Nigel and Nathan; and his two great-grandchildren, Griffin and Cal.
He graduated from Paseo High School in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1953. At Paseo, he played football and was in the Letterman’s Club. He also was a member of ROTC, sang in the a ca****la choir and was voted Best Personality in his senior class.
Vick graduated from Rockhurst College in 1957 and earned a master’s degree from Central Missouri State University. He played on the Rockhurst varsity baseball team, lettered four years and was the team captain his senior year. Vick also played baseball on senior 3&2 and Ban Johnson teams in 1960 and 1961. As manager of the Funkhauser team, his team won the Ban Johnson Baseball League Championship in 1962.
As a career, Vick taught Latin, civics, American history and physical education and coached football, basketball and track at Center South Junior High in Kansas City. He started teaching in 1958 as a member of the original faculty at the school and was the last of the original faculty to leave the school when he retired in 1988. Vick was honored as an inductee to the Center High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2023.
After teaching, Vick was appointed as Cass County health director in 1989 and served in that office for almost 10 years.
Active in civic organizations, Vick served as president of the Cass County Library Board and was a Cass County election judge for many years. He was a founder of the Mount Pleasant Fire Protection District and served as president for 24 years.
Vick was a lifelong Catholic and member of St. Sabina Catholic Church in Belton, Missouri. He was a dedicated fan of the Notre Dame football and St. Louis Cardinals baseball teams. He was a Civil War buff, enjoyed American history, was an avid gardener and loved spending time at home with his family. He especially enjoyed coaching his daughters and oldest grandson in baseball when they played in the Belton summer league.
The funeral service will be held at St. Sabina Catholic Church on July 27 at 11 a.m.

Erika Adler Clayman, 79, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away on June 17, 2026. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, June 22, 2026, at Kehilath Israel Blue Ridge Cemetery, 1901 Blue Ridge Blvd., Independence, Missouri, 64052.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The Shul- Chabad of Leawood.

Erika was born June 23, 1946, in Nyírmada, Hungary and embodied the spirit of compassion, love, and support throughout her remarkable life journey. A beacon of resilience and strength, Erika's story began with her emigration to the U.S. at the tender age of ten. With war brewing in her homeland, her family found refuge in Kansas City, where they had relatives. Erika's resilient spirit, coupled with her supportive family, enabled her to thrive in her new surroundings. She graduated from Center High School and later found love in the arms of Eugene Clayman, whom she married in 1966.

Erika's life was a testament to her loving and supportive nature. After working in a doctor's office, she transitioned into the role of a stay-at-home mother when her son Todd was born in 1970, followed by her daughter Dalia in 1973. Always involved in their education and schooling, Erika was the quintessential room mother, forever present and engaged. Known for her love of water, she became certified to teach swimming lessons, creating joyous memories in their home pool with friends, family, and neighbors. Erika's working life resumed when Dalia entered middle school, leading her to a fulfilling career with Gunilla of Sweden. For over 25 years, she travelled extensively, selling cosmetics and attending skincare conventions, before retiring.

Family remained the cornerstone of Erika's life, and her love was boundless. The birth of her granddaughter, Cassidy, in 2007 brought immense joy and she cherished every moment spent with her, supporting and celebrating each milestone. A lover of all children, her heart was big enough to include her faithful four-legged companion, Bentley, who never left her side. Erika's love for family extended to her regular visits to the Lake of the Ozarks, creating memories that will forever be cherished.

Erika's legacy of love and compassion will continue to live on through her husband, Eugene Clayman, her son Todd (Natwasa “Lucy”) Clayman, her daughter Dalia (Andrew) Lewin, her granddaughter Cassidy Lewin, and her brother Gabor Adler. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jeno and Piroska Adler and her sister ZsuZsi Adler.
