What we have all been waiting for...
CRE #5: Looking for Literacy in All the Right Spaces: The Laundromat

This project examines how community-centered approaches can affect family engagement in:
🎤Singing
đź’¬Talking
📚Reading
to children!

Currently, this study is implemented in SIX laundromats in TWO stages…

Stage 1: Change environment to support language and literacy (e.g., books, sitting space, magnetic letters, hopscotch, etc.)

Stage 2: Examine how people from the community can support child-to-child engagement, as well as parent-child engagement.

CRE #4: Connecting the Dots: A 2-Gen Hospital to Community Intervention for Improving Early Childhood Literacy and Family Economic Stability!

3 Years + 2 Generations = BIG research project! CRE #4 aims to provide coaching to the mother before a child is born, work with a multidisciplinary team to provide education and coaching, and build family-hospital connections. Researchers are also documenting factors that lead to replicating this study and the sustainability of 2 generational studies.

Community Partner #4 Connecting the Dots (CTD) - 02/10/2023

Our next research project is…
CRE #4: Connecting the Dots, a 2-Gen Hospital to Community Intervention for Improving Early Childhood Literacy and Family Economic Stability!

This is a BIG project that has been going on for three years with two generations. This project combines long-term educational attainment and economic stability. The participants are pregnant mothers and the study continues until that child is 24 months old.

The objective is to:

(1) provide family coaching before the child is born

(2) provide education, coaching, and tangible resources with a multidisciplinary team

(3) strengthen family-hospital connections

In addition, this study is aiming to identify the most important factors leading to replicability and sustainability in two generational studies.

Meet the First Author:
Jill Pentimonti, Ph.D,
University of Notre Dame

What were your primary goals for this research?

Jill: "Our goal for this work was to understand how the PC TALK program, using the IHI model to support implementation, might impact both parental use of language-facilitating strategies and children’s language gains. We were also interested in understanding the feasibility of implementing PC TALK across three types of home visiting services."

How does this study inform your next research?

Jill: "Given the promising results of this pilot study using the IHI model to support implementation of PC TALK, I believe a natural next step would be to conduct a fully powered study designed to separately evaluate the contribution of the IHI model to successful implementation."

Impacts of a Parent-Implemented Language Intervention on Children’s Language Development Within Home Visiting Researchers used a pilot randomized control trial to look at the efficacy of the Promoting Communication Tools for Advancing Language in Kids (PC TALK) intervention within three home visiting programs to enhance the language development of young children. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) model was used to support implementation. The aim of the project was to see how the PC TALK intervention, supported by the IHI model (i.e., local planning team with home visitors, professional learning in three sessions, monthly implementation calls, and using the results to measure progress of children’s development and implementing change) would enhance parent-implemented strategies.
