Today, SVN remembers the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honors the courage of the firefighters, police officers, and everyday heroes who ran toward danger to help others.

As a school community, we believe it's important to teach our students about this day — not just as a moment in history, but as a lesson in compassion, service, and unity. We're grateful for the first responders and service members who continue to protect and serve our communities every day.

Today we honor the hardworking individuals whose dedication and contributions build and strengthen our communities. To all the working parents, essential workers, and everyone who puts in the effort every day — thank you.

Leadership Spotlight: Superintendent Nicole Goodman!

Long before she led one of Missouri's top-performing charter schools, Nicole was collecting discarded workbooks from school dumpsters to build her own pretend classroom. That love for learning never stopped, and since arriving at SVN in 2011, she has helped guide our school to become one of the top-performing charter schools in Missouri!

Congratulations to our very own Director of Student and Family Support Services, Deidre Anderson-Barbee, who was recently named a recipient of the NASPAA (Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs and Administration) global Alumni Spotlight Award!

Deidre's career has spanned nearly three decades of public service, from child welfare work to leading a Kansas City early childhood nonprofit, to serving as Missouri's assistant commissioner of the Office of Childhood, all before bringing her heart for families to SVN.

"You can't just make decisions from behind a desk. You need to be out where families are."

We're so proud to have Deidre's experience and passion on our team this year!

Leadership Spotlight: Meet Samuel Johnson! 🏀

Sam brings a strong combination of educational leadership, management, community engagement, and student support experience to our administrative team. With an Ed.S. degree, a Master's in Management and Leadership, more than eight years of management experience, and over 16 years as a head women's basketball coach, Sam understands how to build relationships, lead teams, and develop people.

His experience as a Behavior Specialist further strengthens our team, bringing expertise in student behavior, problem-solving, and supporting student success.
"Sam's dedication, collaborative leadership style, and ability to build positive relationships make him a valuable addition to the administrative team."

Meet the leader of our Warrior family! As we kick off the 2026-27 school year, we're proud to spotlight Principal Allyson Thurston, who begins her 14th year at SVN! Mrs. Thurston has served our school as a teacher, instructional coach, and administrator, and her love of education started even earlier, growing up as the daughter of two teachers.

"I believe all children should have the opportunity to find that joy [of learning], with access to a high-quality education that prepares them for the future."
