I think it’s safe to say the first snowfall of the year was a big hit! Our students made the most of every flake, from sledding and exploring to playing in the fresh powder. Days like this remind us how magical outdoor learning can be in any weather.

It has been such a joy welcoming our students back into the classroom. From hands-on work indoors to adventures outdoors, the children are already thriving. Exploring, creating, learning, and growing each day. Their curiosity and joy remind us how special it is to be part of a Montessori community.

What a beautiful start to the school year it has been. Our Primary students, ages 3 to 6, have been busy exploring, learning, and creating both in the classroom and outdoors.
The Montessori Primary program nurtures independence, curiosity, and confidence during these foundational years. To learn more about our program, we invite you to check out our website.

“We must study the correlation between life and the environment. In nature all is correlated. This is the purpose of nature.” - Maria Montessori
The rain isn’t always a bummer around here! With it brings a couple of our favorite things. Mud and worms!!!!

“Even though I have studied this question for a long time, I am continually surprised. I understand more and more how advanced and able small children can be.” - Dr. Montessori
These past couple months have been crazy but fun. (Isn’t that always the holiday season though? Haha.) We missed everyone over break and were all very excited to be back with our friends. There’s something about the structure of a routine that’s so comforting for a lot of our students and easing back into ours has been nice. We’re excited to see what the rest of this school year will bring and look forward to seeing how our students advance.

Time really does fly when you’re engrossed in a lesson! Our students are learning something new everyday, and I’m always amazed when they come to share their new facts with me. I’m excited to see what the rest of this school year will bring us, but so far we’re having a blast!

Now vs Then
None of it would be possible without Maria Montessori.

About Countryside:
Located on 80 acres of secluded farm land, about 10 minutes from KCI airport, is where you’ll find Countryside. A Montessori school that’s been serving the Kansas City Northland since 2007. In a converted dairy barn you will find four of our classrooms; the Toddler, Pre-Primary, and two Primary classrooms. A renovated house on the property is where our Elementary program is, and a renovated garage is where our Infant classroom has recently relocated. On the back of the 80 acres is a creek and an outdoor building. This space is used weekly throughout the school year, and daily throughout the summer.
About Countrysides Elementary Program:
Our Elementary program runs from August through May and reflects a traditional Montessori Elementary environment. During the summer the school host our Forest School program which is for ages 6-12 years old. This program shows students how to use different types of tools, identify animals and plants, start fires, and gardening skills. All in between the students swimming, cooking over the fire, sculpting with natural clay they collected, and building forts. This is located at the outdoor classroom, and Elementary teachers do work the Forest School program during the summer.

The first month of Summer 2023 in the books!
After looking over all of our photos I can’t help but reflect on the month we’ve had. Our kiddos have gotten to play, swim, kayak, cook, garden, explore the property, be with nature one on one, and so much more. Most importantly though they’ve had the opportunity to be creative. Attached is an article I found that describes the different types of creative play, why the freedom to be creative is important for children, and how to foster creative play. This article also speaks as to why creative play is important for teachers in the classroom, so it reads like it’s speaking to teachers at points. I figured all parents teach things, so it would still apply and be suitable to share haha!
Our students are always coming up with new ways to use materials. The other day our Forest School kiddos used a piece of plywood and made a make shift seesaw on a log (2nd picture). Something my mind would not of even thought of doing, but was common sense to them.
What’s something you’ve seen your kiddo(s) do that made you think “huh that’s thinking outside of the box” ?
