🌾 Tackling the Rural Maternal Care Crisis 🌟
Dr. Karen Weis, Associate Director of Research at the Kansas Center for Rural Health, is leading innovative efforts to address gaps in maternity care across Kansas through a transformative HRSA grant.
The project focuses on training local sonographers, emergency OB training for staff, creating nurse navigator roles, and developing protocols for maternal transports and blood sharing. Working with the Sunflower Moms network, the initiative spans three rural hospitals to improve care access and outcomes.
Challenges like staffing shortages, inadequate reimbursement models, and rural recruitment remain—but with collaboration and innovation, Dr. Weis and her collaborators are determined to make a lasting impact. 💪❤️

That’s a wrap! We finished off the KAFP meeting earlier this afternoon with a training session, latex to Laryngoscopy, where our members learn valuable clinical techniques which they will be able to practice more on their site! We look forward to hearing more about their experiences over the next month. We appreciate all your support, and we think our sponsors and members for your continued interest in promoting rural medicine. Stay tuned over the next two months as we bring more insight into our experiences in rural practice.

Day one recap! Many good conversations about rural health, family practice, and professionalism were had! Our three campus presidents were present, as well as a valued member and sponsor of our group, Dr. Jennifer Bacani McKenney! We are very grateful for the support and guidance of her and other KAFP members as we work to promote interest in rural health. Tomorrow promises more discussion and training as RMIG members prepare for their 4 to 6 week STORM experiences. Great work everyone!

This week we hosted a panel of rural general surgeons (and one general surgery resident) to share their experiences in rural general surgery. We enjoyed learning more about the challenges and rewards with this career path and hope it inspired our peers to consider pursuing general surgery practice in a rural community.
Special thanks to our guests - Michelle McGuirk, MD (Coffeyville), Tyler Hughes, MD (McPherson/Salina), and Sam Bruna, MD/PGY-II (KU Wichita General Surgery Residency)!

This week we had the privilege of listening to Kristina Darnauer, MD and Stacy Dashiell, MD (KS Family Physician of the Year 2020) from Sterling Medical Center! They discussed what having a shared practice looks like in rural Kansas and how this practice style helps them both be better moms and physicians. We also heard about the pandemic response in their community and the unique challenges it has posed.
Thank you for your time Dr. Darnauer and Dr. Dashiell!
