The Reading Nook

Had a great morning doing a craft project, Reading the Christmas story from Luke and Rev Jim Simpson handing out bibles to the kids. Highlight was one of the girls wanting to read a loud to the other kids! She did a fabulous job! So proud of what the kids have accomplished.

Reading Nook is back in a modified version! Our leadership team has continued to meet virtually the past year and attempted to try and do individual reading with the kids. We found we did not have the right technology to make it work. Since the weather is getting warmer and vaccines are more available we decided to have activities with the kids outside! It was great to see the kids and a few of our volunteers after a year hiatus. We had a craft project, dyed Easter Eggs, played Bible bingo, had egg races, a discussion about Resurrection Sunday and an Easter Egg hunt! We are looking to do another Reading Nook on the third Saturday of April. We will not be doing 1:1 reading at this time and hope to be able to resume that next Fall. Meantime if you would like to come and volunteer with games and activities we would love to see you again.

We had a perfect day for 75 Reading Nook students to recieve a backpack with school supplies for this year! After a long hiatus it was good to see everyone again. Thanks to the churches, Central UMC, Centennial UMC, Rez Downtown and St Andrews UMC, along with Reading Nook volunteers that donated backpacks, school supplies and cash donations that made this possible. We also gave out 1200 books so every child at Kuomba Pamoja UMC could take some home with them!

Sharon and I have celebrated the end of our school year with others, now we'd love to do the same with YOU! Benoit Bilombele, the young man on the Reading Nook's transportation team, has documented the year with the enclosed video.

Besides reading to our students we also use games as a way to learn language skills. Our volunteers and students enjoyed time playing games together on Saturday.

Hope everyone is staying warm this snowy Saturday! Here is the schedule for winter/spring 2020. We were blessed with so many returning volunteers last week and one new volunteer! Also, if you would be interested in providing a lunch to the kids let us know. We could really use some volunteers for lunch as well!
