In the 1920s, you could take the street car to the Kansas City Art Institute. And soon, you will be able to again! KC Streetcar

From approx. 1920-1928 KCAI was located at the corner of Warwick Blvd. and Armour Blvd. The purchase of the August Meyer home by Howard Vanderslice in the late 1920s allowed the college to move a few blocks south to the current location.

The Conversational Dish: Ceramics and Social Practice
March 30 - April 13, 2023

Students in the Conversational Dish course explore the handmade vessel as an intimate and social object that has the power to start conversations, convey information, tell stories, change behavior, and create social interactions. Students are actively studying the relationship of the ceramic dishes that they are making—their design and function—to food, information sharing, and food-based gatherings.

As part of the coursework, students identified personal interests and resources available at Jannes Library and used their research to design, create, and activate their handmade dishes through interactions with peers and the community at large.

The projects that you see displayed on the tables and window sills (including underneath the stairs) on the first floor are the outcome of this work. Students in the Conversational Dish hosted events with peers on campus to kick off the project. Prior experience with ceramics was not required to enroll in the course, so students of all experience levels from a variety of different majors across campus are represented.

Many of these dishes are available for use while on display. Please read the didactic information provided for more context and instructions regarding use and handling of these artworks. Similarly, the library resources are presented and available for perusing. Please return all books and works to their original locations after interacting.

Participating Artists:
MIa Silkett, Juliet Miller, Ellie Westhoff, Olivia Scheible, Kate Harmon, Horace Suffredini, Ella Elshekh, Alyssa Sipe, Jude Croft, Rachel Kaufman, Nancy Gordon, Leon Mcallister, Seon Kim, Sophia Koch-Holdsworth. Special thank you to Warwick Laing and the library staff (Megan, Lora, Zach, Madelyn and team) for all their assistance.

Please make sure that all cups are washed and dried after use (bathroom sinks are available for this) and be careful not to leave wet surfaces anywhere that might damage books or other valuable library resources. Thank you!
