Rockhurst University's Visiting Scholar Lecture Series was founded in 1955 by Rev. Daues, S.J., which he directed for over 30 years. The series was established to enhance the cultural and intellectual climate of the University and the surrounding community. Since its inception, the series provided a forum for discussing topics of historical and contemporary significance in a range of fields. With
five to seven lectures annually, we have welcomed over 300 speakers to campus. Among these, some of the more recognizable names include Robert Frost, Rev. John Courtney Murray, SJ, Henry Kissinger (while still on the Harvard faculty), Barbara Ward, Edward Albee, Jean Bethke Elshtain, Etienne Gilson, Monika Hellwig, Rev. Robert Drinan, SJ, David Broder, Gertrude Himmelfarb, R. Buckminster Fuller, Rev. Hans Kung, Diana Hayes, Rigoberto Menchu Tum, Rev. Walter Ong, SJ (and graduate of Rockhurst), John Hope Franklin, Gary Wills, R. Buckminster Fuller, Clarence Page, Stanley Fish, Jacob Neusner, Dava Sobel, Ralph McInerny, Diana Butler Bass, Sen.
