Dowling, S.J., wrote to his superiors telling them that he had selected a site at 52nd Street and Troost Avenue for the Jesuit school that was to be built in Kansas City. He called it “Rockhurst,” drawing inspiration from legendary Stonyhurst College in England, because the grounds were stony and a grove of woods nearby inspired him to use the word “hurst.”

ROCK ATHLETICS - WEEK 1 SCHEDULE presented by McCarthy Auto Group
Ranked #1 in Missouri to start the 2026 season, the Football Hawklets face St. Pius X in the opener for the third straight year. Rockhurst is 2-0 in those matchups against the Warriors and will have the home field advantage on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Dasta Stadium. The AquaHawks, coming off of a State Runner-Up finish in 2025, head to Blue Springs on Saturday morning for the annual SouthRock Invitational at the Blue Springs Pool Plex.
Soccer and Cross Country will have their first competitions next week.

One week away! Rockhurst is excited to host another year of its Jesuit Speaker Series! The first of four installments in the 2026-27 school year will take place on Monday, Aug. 31 at 7:00 p.m.
Fr. Patrick Hough, SJ, will share his talk called "Triumph of Grace Over Tribulation." Fr. Hough is the Director of Retreat Ministry at Grand Coteau Retreats in Louisiana and the Executive Director of Advancement for the Jesuits USA Central and Southern Province.
Jesuit Speaker Series events are open to the public and are free to attend. AMDG

This was part of President David Laughlin's message during this morning's all-school Virtue Assembly in the Rose Theater. Kicking off Rockhurst's focus on virtue education this year, we will host an assembly at the beginning of each month with various speakers focusing on different virtues in the context of God's Greater Glory.
