The Unemployment Clinic assists persons who have been denied unemployment benefits and have elected
The volunteer attorney model employed by Core is not new or even exclusive to our community. However, what makes Core unique is our commitment to partner with community non-profit organizations in a collaborative effort to serve their clients in an accessible and culturally responsive fashion. Our professional collaborations and experience will enable us to develop meaningful, long lasting relatio
nships with partner organizations serving diverse populations. The Clinic is a service provided by Core Legal Advocates in conjunction with the University of Missouri Kansas City Law School. The Unemployment Clinic assists persons who have been denied unemployment benefits and have elected to appeal the denial to the Appeals Tribunal. The Tribunal conducts hearings to allow parties to present evidence to show that the determination regarding unemployment insurance (UI) benefits made by the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations- Division of Employment Security (DES) is right or wrong. Individuals filing for UI benefits can appeal the determination of ineligibility, disqualification, or the amount of UI benefits awarded within 30 days. Equally, employers can appeal the determination of eligibility, qualification, or the amount of benefits awarded to their former employees within 30 days. This hearing may be the only opportunity a party may have to present evidence. Cases will be screened and if accepted the case will be referred to a volunteer attorney who will supervise the assigned law students for the hearing before the Tribunal. If you have been denied unemployment and are within the time restrictions to appeal please call CORE legal advocates or e-mail [email protected] and fill out the intake form. You may be eligible to receive free legal assistance from the UMKC School of Law Unemployment Compensation Clinic in regard to your denial of benefits. Such assistance includes representation at appeals hearings before the Labor and Industrial Relations Commission Appeals Tribunal, appeals to the Commission from the Tribunal’s decision and appeals to the Missouri Court of Appeals from the decision of the Commission. The Clinic will screen your case to determine if you are eligible for services
