We are excited to celebrate one of our own, Dr. Monica Alston, a proud Paseo Academy alum, on her appointment as principal of Banneker Elementary in Kansas City Public Schools!

Dr. Alston continues to exemplify excellence, leadership, and dedication to student success. From her time at Paseo to leading in KCPS, she is a true reflection of what it means to be Paseo Proud.

After an extensive search that included meaningful collaboration with our staff and families, we are pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Monica Alston as the new principal for Banneker Elementary School.

Dr. Monica Alston brings 17 years of experience in education, including 14 years with Kansas City Public Schools. She began her career teaching 4th–6th grades before joining Melcher Elementary eight years ago, where she served as a reading interventionist, instructional coach, and most recently, assistant principal for four years. In these roles, she built strong relationships with students, staff, and families while leading systems that supported student success both in the classroom and the community.

A proud KCPS graduate, Dr. Alston completed her studies at Paseo Academy in 2004. She earned a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from Tuskegee University, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Webster University, and Educational Specialist degrees in Language & Literacy and Educational Administration from the University of Missouri–Kansas City. She later completed her doctorate at the University of Missouri–Columbia, where her research highlighted educators across the U.S. who prioritize culturally responsive teaching.

Dr. Alston is honored to serve the Banneker Elementary School community and is excited for all that the future holds.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Alston! We know she will be a fantastic addition to the Banneker family and will continue to be an incredible resource for KCPS!
