The Month of May is designated as not only Hepatitis Awareness Month, but also Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month.
This month celebrates the important milestones in AANPI heritage and history and encourages us to improve the health of our Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities. AANHPI's make up about 5% of the total population in the United States, but account for more than 50% of Americans living with chronic Hepatitis B - an estimated 1 in 12 Asian Americans is living with Hepatitis B (CDC 2020). The number of HIV diagnoses has also increased over recent years, so it is important to also raise awareness as more than 1 in 5 people in our Asian American populations are living with HIV and do not know they have it. To help spread awareness online, you can share the hashtag .
Lastly, HIV Vaccine Awareness Day (HVAD) is also observed on May 18 - this event is an opportunity to recognize the many volunteers, community members, health professionals, and scientists who are working together to find a safe and effective vaccine to prevent HIV. We hope to spread awareness and educate communities about the importance of HIV vaccine research, Hepatitis awareness, and AANHPI heritage!
