For more than 100 years, proud UMKC School of Dentistry alumni in the Kutina family have been practicing across Kansas. What began in 1925 has grown into a legacy, with eight oral healthcare practitioners across four generations. For the Kutina family, dentistry is more than a profession, and a UMKC School of Dentistry education has been an important part of the journey, helping lay the foundation for careers dedicated to caring for their communities.

Sean O’Brien (J.D. ’80) is a family man, mentor and tireless advocate whose life and career have been deeply intertwined with the UMKC School of Law for more than four decades as a student and professor. O’Brien has dedicated his career to advocating for others, successfully arguing two U.S. Supreme Court cases and helping more than 40 people through litigation involving wrongful convictions, death sentences and juveniles sentenced to life without parole.

Now, the Innocence Project has honored O’Brien with its Award for Freedom and Justice for his work fighting wrongful convictions, including his role in ending Sandra Hemme’s 43-year incarceration, the longest known wrongful incarceration of a woman in U.S. history.

As he prepares to retire from the School of Law after nearly 22 years, O’Brien will continue teaching investigation courses alongside his daughter and involving law students in their work through the Investigation and Advocacy Service, which they founded with former students.

The Critical Materials Crossroads Engine team, led by UMKC, has been named a winner of the National Science Foundation Regional Innovation Engines award. This $160 million award is the largest research grant awarded to UMKC, the UM System and the state of Missouri.

Critical minerals like nickel, cobalt and magnesium power the technologies we rely on every day, from smartphones and microchips to electric vehicles and energy systems. Now, as Kansas City’s Carnegie R1 university, UMKC will lead a national hub focused on strengthening America’s supply chains, national security and global competitiveness through materials innovation.

When Sherri Wattenbarger (B.A. ’91, J.D. ’93) was six years old, her father taught her the value of asking for help when you need it. Now, she and husband Brian Beins are paying that lesson forward through a $575,000 estate gift supporting first-generation law students and Athletics.

Despite her college journey taking unanticipated turns, Wattenbarger achieved many of the things in her career she set out to do. She attributes much of that to her resilience, hard work and willingness to ask for help. The help she received from UMKC is a large part of what influenced Wattenbarger and Beins to make their own estate gift.
