100 year old barns still standing ! I have noticed that the barns that were still intact that all the gutters still worked for I believe if you take care of your gutters and do not allow the water to set around your barns! Your barn may stand as long as your Father’s Did! This Barn was in Marshal Mo

Raising the Barn

One walked through the gates of this farm and was transported back in time. There was something about the Amish that we could all learn from. The leader of these people had one of the kindest hearts and biggest families I’d ever met. He invited me to a barn raising. It was amazing seeing 50 men, wearing their homespun clothes, work, and their wives working hard on food preparation. Their young boys seemed more like grown men. We had gathered in Central Missouri to perform a tradition that hadn’t been performed in more than 100 years; I was told. The 12x12 beams of the barn was being put back together on the ground. The wall was huge. These massive walls, full of history, were erected by 50 men and me. Along with a few ropes and some horses, the walls were slowly risen into place. I was transported back in time. The kids were running up and down headers connecting the corners and making lines where the roof would be connected. With two hand built ladders, Men ran up and down with the previously built rafters simultaneously. The top went up within minutes. I smile at the memory of the special treat I was able to witness. I was asked not to bring my phone, but as I was leaving I took a picture from the truck. I hope you enjoy it.

Today, Most Barns do not have A hay trolly ! So I asked myself, are today’s barns really barns? Is this just a name that has carried on through our forefathers and our ancestors! I believe back in the day when you built a barn ! It had a Hay trolly !! The Hay was stored up high to keep it dry on the pine loft! If the hay got wet it would mold ! The Mold Would create a chemical reactions of flammable gases! This was the purpose of the barn! What do you think ? Are todays barns really barns are is this just a name we Use because that’s what Dad and Grandpa called it ?

A old farmer from Missouri told me once. When we was kids and the corn was tall! We would sneak out to the barn and have a dance ! When we was kids we used to have so much fun in this old barn! Today this tradition seems to have carried on which I believe is an American tradition! Barn dancing!
