SPARK is offering beginner and advanced "Tai Chi for Arthritis" classes this fall - and you don't have to have arthritis to participate. Beginners: 10-11 Mondays, starting Sept. 14. Advanced: 11-noon Mondays. Good for balance and fall prevention! The teacher is Sarah Stanmorr, nurse and certified Tai Chi for Arthritis instructor.

Mission Chateau, 4800 W. 85th St., Prairie Village, will be the setting for a class sure to appeal to local history buffs. Entitled "Abandoned KC," the class will be a "deep dive into the history of Kansas City told through an investigation of the buildings that now stand abandoned." This six-week class, which is open to SPARK members as well as Mission Chateau residents, will start Monday, Sept. 14 and takes place from 1:30-3:30 Mondays. SPARK members register with SPARK. Mission Chateau residents should register with their activity director. The instructor is Regina Daniel, a published author, renowned photographer, and owner of Red Vixen Photography

Instructor profile: Carol McCavitt teaches Western Civilization on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Carol has been teaching for SPARK since 2009. Before moving to Kansas City, she was a high school teacher on Long Island, where she taught Advanced Placement European History for 20 years. Educated as an undergraduate at SUNY at Stony Brook, Carol completed her Master's Degree at Queens College in New York City and did her doctoral work at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
