June is Immigrant Heritage Month.

Immigrants are part of Kansas City’s past, present, and future. At a time when many immigrant families are facing fear, political attacks, economic pressure, and increased enforcement activity, it can be hard to know how to support them.

Here is what you can do this month:

⭐Share trusted Know Your Rights resources.
⭐ Support immigrant-owned businesses.
⭐Donate to local legal and family support organizations.
⭐Speak up when immigrants are blamed or targeted.
⭐ If immigration enforcement activity happens near you, stay calm, keep distance, document only if it is safe, and connect people to trusted support.

Immigrant families should not have to face this moment alone.

Celebrate immigrants. Support immigrants. Now more than ever.

Getting school funding right in Kansas matters for students, schools, educators and the rest of us • Kansas Reflector 05/28/2026

Kansas has a real opportunity to get the school funding formula right, which means funding specialized supports for students who require them - including support for students with disabilities. As many areas of the state see huge growth in Spanish-speaking residents, building a funding formula that supports these families and their children's needs is an investment in retaining the future workforce, boosting economic growth, and making Kansas a welcoming place for all.

88.5% of Hispanic Americans ages 25 to 29 hold a high school diploma. 30 years ago, that number was 58%. Every Hispanic and Latino senior graduating this season is part of a success story that is still being written. Imagine where we will be in another 30 years!

Families deserve to know where their student stands before the last day of school.

This week, ask your school about:
• Your student's progress in reading, math, and core subjects (ask for specific examples, not just grades)
• Documents to save: final report card, IEP or 504 plan, immunization and health records
• How the school will communicate over the summer, and who the point of contact will be
• The supports your student will need next year (tutoring, speech intervention, transportation, programs)

Clear information is power. The questions families ask are not interruptions, they are part of public school accountability. Informed families build more accountable schools.

The right to be understood is the right to learn.

For Hispanic and Latino families in Kansas City, education advocacy means making sure language is never the barrier between a student and their classroom, or between a family and the school making decisions about that student. When a child cannot hear, speak, or be understood in their classroom, learning suffers. When a family cannot understand a teacher, an IEP meeting, or a school notice in their language, participation suffers.

Ask your school:
• What speech, language, and hearing supports are available?
• How is interpretation provided to families?
• Who is responsible when communication breaks down?

Families deserve to be informed participants in their child's learning. That requires real communication, not translation that arrives after the decision has already been made.

May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, and RevEd recognizes the speech-language pathologists, audiologists, bilingual educators, and interpreters who make communication possible in Kansas City schools.

Kansas City Public Schools is gathering public feedback on its FY27 budget through an online budget tool. The survey gives community members a chance to review budget categories, consider tradeoffs, and share what they believe should be protected or prioritized.

Budget decisions affect the daily experience of students: staffing, transportation, student support, language access, school safety, enrichment, and the resources available in classrooms.

Hispanic and Latino families deserve to be part of these conversations before decisions are made.

Take a few minutes to complete the KCPS budget feedback survey. Your perspective belongs in the process.

Schools around Kansas City are shrinking staff and programs over budget deficits 05/18/2026

School districts across the Kansas City region are navigating declining enrollment, state funding shortfalls, special education underfunding, expiring federal relief dollars, and local property tax decisions. In several districts, those pressures are already leading to staff reductions, school consolidation plans, program changes, higher fees, and deeper reliance on reserves.

For Hispanic and Latino families, these decisions can affect class sizes, transportation, mental health support, language access, special education services, after-school programs, and the stability students need throughout the school year.

Families should not hear about budget decisions only after the cuts are already made.

Districts need to communicate clearly about what is being protected, what is being reduced, and how families can weigh in before decisions are finalized.

Attend a school board meeting or reach out to your local district. Ask how budget decisions will affect students, families, and the support your school community depends on.
