Our clients had a fun and meaningful month, from riding the KC Streetcar to City Market and visiting the National Museum of Toys and Miniatures to making Puppy Chow in cooking group to share with peers. We also began volunteering with NourishKC Community Kitchen, where clients are helping prepare the space for the free food pantry.

Our students had a busy and exciting month, volunteering across Kansas City, building birdhouses, exploring sensory play, and enjoying time outdoors. Alongside these hands-on experiences, many students continued thriving within their classroom routines. We were also glad to welcome two new students to Sherwood this month.

May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month (often called Speech Therapy Month), dedicated to raising awareness about communication disorders and highlighting the work of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and audiologists. The 2026 theme is "Speech and Hearing Hero," honoring professionals who provide life-changing intervention to the 5–10% of Americans with communication challenges.

International Museum Day is celebrated annually on May 18 to highlight the vital role museums play in cultural exchange, education, and community development. Coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the 2026 theme is “Museums Uniting a Divided World,” focusing on fostering peace, inclusion, and dialogue.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to fight stigma, provide support, and educate the public on mental health wellness. Founded in 1949, this awareness month highlights that mental health is essential for everyone, with 1 in 5 adults experiencing mental illness each year. The 2026 focus emphasizes community, connection, and creating "more good days" through support.
