☀️Kilo🌧️

Kilo is not just the act of observation, but the daily practice of observing the same natural elements from the same location at the same time each day. Our keiki engage in these observations multiple times throughout the day, depending on their age and interest level.

It doesn’t need to take a long time. Even just a few seconds of dedicated observation each day will give you better insight into your place and hopefully a closer relationship with the natural environment around you. Try it with your ʻohana and let us know in the comments what you experience. At the very least you should be able to anticipate if you will need an umbrella later in the day.

We also want to give a sincere MAHALO to for their very generous donation of split AC systems for our classrooms. It is often challenging for keiki to fall asleep when they are hot and sweaty and the addition of cool air has been a game changer. On behalf of everyone at Kūlaniākea, especially the sweaty kids, mahalo piha 🙏🏽💖

✨Kalākaua✨

Our keiki cannot imagine a world where they are not allowed to speak their language, dance hula, or celebrate the things that make them who they are as Hawaiians.

And yet, that world existed not very long ago.

That is part of why we honor Mōʻī Kane David Laʻamea Kalākaua, our last ruling King, who traveled the world and helped restore pride in Hawaiian arts and knowledge.

Before the Mele Manaka feels fade, we mahalo our Merrie Monarch for helping to ensure that our keiki inherit joy, ʻike, and a living love of hula and mele.

✨Lāhui Edition✨

“The internationally recognised nation of Hawaiʻi was overthrown in 1893. Queen Liliʻuokalani wrote her autobiography, Hawaii’s Story by Hawaii’s Queen, while waiting to present her case for restoring the Hawaiian nation in Boston to the Congress of the United States. America was a country that had an active treaty with the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi at the time of the overthrow. A group of businessmen who had pledged their citizenship to the Kingdom while at the same time embedded in the Islands expanding sugar industry.

This story is a first-person narrative from Queen Liliʻuokalani, a Hawaiian leader at the epicenter of change in the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. The Queen’s autobiography will help readers understand the complex history of Hawaiʻi, the nature of Hawaiian people, and their deep commitment to aloha ‘āina–love of country and the continuation of a sovereign future.

This lāhui edition, reprinted from the first edition of the first printing of a book, is now in its 15th printing. Deepening our understanding of the history of Hawaiʻi will bring pono forward for kānaka ʻōiwi, the people of Hawaiʻi, and humanity. The words of Queen Liliʻuokalani help all of us understand our hana, the work we must do together, creating pilina, trusting relationships inspired by the Queen’s legacy of aloha, and care for all people of this resilient and reaffirming lāhui.”

Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono.

✨Lili’uokalani✨

Possibly the most important work in Hawaiian literature, Hawaiʻi’s Story by Hawaiʻi’s Queen is a poignant plea from Queen Liliʻuokalani to restore her people’s kingdom.

Hawaii’s Story is an account of those difficult years at the end of the nineteenth century, when native Hawaiian historian David Malo’s 1837 prophecy concerning “the small ones” being “gobbled up” came true for the Hawaiian Islands.

When this book was first published in 1898, it was an international plea for justice. Just as Admiral Thomas had restored Hawaiian sovereignty in 1843 following an illegal action by Lord Paulet, Queen Liliʻuokalani prayed that the American nation would similarly reestablish the Hawaiian throne. Queen Liliʻuokalani died on November 11, 1917, her poignant plea for justice unanswered.

🙏🏽Hawaiʻi needs healing🙏🏽

Healing takes all of us. You don’t need to be Hawaiian to stand for Hawaiʻi. You just need to genuinely love and care for this place, respect its people, and give more than you take when you are here.

For generations, Hawaiians have been working toward healing. But one of the greatest obstacles has been the ongoing destruction of our lands by the U.S. military—through bombing, desecration, exploitation, and harm to our communities.

Resolution 234-25 is a step toward ending this cycle of destruction. Please take a moment to read it for yourself, and email your testimony to Hawaiʻi County Council:

[email protected]

Stand with us in saying:

We love Hawaiʻi.
Stop the bombing.
Let healing begin.
