Whether you are close friends or acquaintances, you know how easy it is to feel connected when making music within a group. Why does this happen? Can group music making be used to increase social connectedness?
Molly Grettenberger and Sheridan Brown are breaking down their study on how they used motion capture to look at movement synchronization as well as qualitative interviews to look at social connectedness!
If you want to learn more, you can read Molly’s thesis here: https://scholarworks.wmich.edu/masters_theses/5158/ and Sheridan’s thesis here: https://scholarworks.wmich.edu/masters_theses/5153/.

Neocortical substrates of feelings evoked with music in the ACC, insula, and somatosensory cortex Neurobiological models of emotion focus traditionally on limbic/paralimbic regions as neural substrates of emotion generation, and insular cortex (in conjunction with isocortical anterior cingulate cortex, ACC) as the neural substrate of feelings. Asking our colleagues and friends... what improvisation articles have you been reading lately? We have really been enjoying, "Jazz Musicians Reveal Role of Expectancy in Human Creativity" from Przysinda et al., 2017!
"Results suggest that creativity entails being sensitive and engaged with unexpected events within a well-learned context, and that training sharpens our expectations and can have general implications for how humans learn to be creative." (p. 52)
