About the Workshop:
Did you know that once upon a time, Yoga gurus made their pupils meditate on Himalayan mountainsides until the intensity of their concentration melted the snow around them? Well, we may not manage that in this workshop, but we WILL banish the cold with a dynamic asana practice to harness the power of heart-opening. We'll explore and experience the Yogic concept of tapas -- sustained burning to achieve transformation -- through our radiantly vibrating bodies, as we work first to loosen our cold- and coat-hardened limbs, then inward toward the center, to free our hearts from the cages of collapsed winter chests. You may just walk out ready to melt the snow! This workshop is open to all, although some previous knowledge of basic yoga asanas will be helpful.
About the Instructor:
Anna began practicing Yoga as a teenager in a black-lit bedroom, and studying formally at the Iyengar Yoga Center of Marseille, France in 2004. She trained as a Yoga teacher in 2012-13 at YogaWorks in New York City, where she taught Yoga to adults and high school students before moving to Kalamazoo in 2014. Since then she has been pursuing the rigorous but rewarding path toward certification in the Iyengar method, under the mentorship of CIYTs Mary Reilly and Jennifer Beaumont. She is passionate about sharing the grace and precision of Yoga master BKS Iyengar's teachings with her students, and witnessing their transformation.

September never fails to make me feel oh-so-temporarily super-human, and that burst of back-to-school energy can be at once exhilarating and intimidating to harness.... I have new crayons and a plan, now what? Will this pan out the way I envision? How high should I set my expectations? And, most pressingly in Michigan, will this flame of ardor burn as brightly once the snow begins to fall? Will I be disappointed that I couldn’t sustain my Septemberian hopes? Yoga offers a useful perspective for facing these inevitably transient energetic shifts with equanimity: that we should work without fixation on the fruits of our labors. That is, relish the energy and optimism of this seasonal moment, enjoy the experience of working and planning so effortlessly, so that when the surge wanes we still have the unalloyed spark of that experience to see us through the winter. And as the Gita reminds us, “No step on this path is wasted.” The ardent, hopeful work we do now will light the path onward. So, Happy “Non-attachment-to-the-fruits-of-your-Labor” Day to you all! xxoo
