Welcome back Broncos! We hope you have had a great start to the semester so far. With the mask mandate, our department understands it can be difficult to learn a language with a mouth covering, however we need to stay safe. The World Languages and Literatures’ department chair, Vincent Desroches, has come up with a way to provide students in our language acquisition courses with clear masks to assist with language learning in the midst of a pandemic. Let us know what you think! How has your clear mask experience been?

Western Michigan University is hosting a webinar on Disaster Language Interpretation. All members of the University community, students, staff and faculty, can participate if they are bilingual in any languages. Members of the Kalamazoo community can participate as well. The webinar will be available on Wednesday April 15 from 3 to 5, and Friday April 17 from 3 to 5. Please register in advance.

"Volunteer Disaster Interpreting 101" is an introductory training for individuals who would like to provide language assistance for critical community services in moments of crisis, such as:

~ Food Bank
~ Community Kitchen
~ Emergency Shelter
~ Housing Assistance
~ Clothing/Blanket Distribution
~ Search & Rescue

Attendees will learn about ethical guidelines, basic interpreting techniques, and safety precautions. This will be presented in English for attendees speaking any language.

About the Presenter: Michelle A. Scott, RN is the founder and CEO of Voices For Health, Inc., a language agency based in West Michigan with the mission to improve access to quality healthcare, education and social services. With a background in community health nursing, Ms. Scott has extensive experience training interpreters for in-services, conferences and webinars. She is also the content developer for VoicesACADEMY.com, an online continuing education community for healthcare interpreters.
