Meet the newest faculty member in WMU's Dance program: Tyreis Hunte! 👏

Raised across Guyana, Tyreis grew up surrounded by reggae, calypso, soca, and hip-hop — sounds and movement that shaped a lifelong belief that dance and culture can't be separated. Now, they're bringing that global training to Western Michigan University's dance students!

This weekend, WMU dance students Avery Miller, Alaina D’Orazio, Lauren Matz and Megan Anderson, open in Seattle with BARE Dance Company, performing “Nocturnal Animals” — a piece born out of a residency right here on campus led by WMU faculty member and BARE founding Artistic Director Mike Esperanza. Next week, the tour heads to New York City, where WMU visiting guest professor Annalee Traylor joins them on stage.

“This felt like a dream of mine coming true,” said Avery Miller, a 2026 WMU grad. “Seeing how much I loved being a part of this company has opened up new possibilities for my future. It truly made me realize this is what I want to be doing, and I can now see myself being in a company like this one day!” ✨

From residency to the professional stage 💫

Last spring, BARE Dance Company joined WMU Dance for a residency with Mike Esperanza.
Now, four of our students are taking the stage with the company this August in Seattle and New York! 🌆🗽

Experiences like this are just one of the many ways WMU Dance connects students with meaningful professional opportunities, preparing them for successful careers in dance!
