❄️🌲 "What do students do during the winter?" 🌲❄️

It's one of the questions we hear most often from prospective families.

The answer is simple: We keep learning outside!

At Kazoo School, we believe every season has something to teach us; not only about the natural world, but about ourselves. Winter isn't a season to endure; it's a season to embrace.

Snow transforms our campus into a living classroom. Students observe animal tracks, study how plants and wildlife adapt to cold temperatures, explore the science of snow and ice, measure weather patterns, and discover the quiet beauty of a winter forest. They build forts, sled down snowy hills, gather around the fire pit, and experience firsthand that nature never stops teaching.

Just as importantly, winter helps children develop confidence, resilience, perseverance, and a sense of wonder. They learn that with the right clothing and a spirit of adventure, they can find joy in every season.

At Kazoo School, we don't hibernate, we celebrate winter. Because some of the most memorable learning experiences happen when the snow begins to fall.

🎶🌺 Discover the Joy of the Ukulele at Kazoo School! 🌺🎶

One of the things that makes Kazoo School special is our collaboration with talented educators and artists throughout the Kalamazoo community. We're excited to once again partner with Adam Harris, a local musician, educator, and proud parent of former Kazoo student Sidney, to offer individualized beginning ukulele lessons for our students.

Adam's musical journey began right here in the Kalamazoo area. He played French horn in the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony and Kalamazoo Youth Symphonic Band, sousaphone in the Portage Northern Marching Band, sang in choirs and vocal ensembles, and now enjoys sharing his love of music through guitar and ukulele instruction.

Learning the ukulele is a wonderful way for students to develop creativity, confidence, perseverance, and self-expression. Music education also strengthens listening skills, coordination, memory, and problem-solving, all while bringing people together through the joy of making music.

As legendary ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro has shown, four strings can make a big difference in the world. We hope many of our students will discover the fun and satisfaction of making music with Adam.

🌿 Celebrating 6 Years of Outstanding Outdoor Education at Kazoo School! 🌟

What began as a creative response to COVID has become a defining part of who we are. This year, we're proud to celebrate six years of our Outdoor Education Program; a program that has transformed the way our students learn, grow, and connect with the world around them.

At Kazoo School, nature isn't just a backdrop, it's one of our greatest teachers.

Every day, our students venture into the woods, learn in outdoor classrooms, observe wildlife, investigate ecosystems, create art inspired by nature, and discover that some of life's greatest lessons happen beyond four walls. Whether they're conducting science experiments, writing poetry beneath the trees, solving real-world problems, or simply taking a Woods Walk, our students experience learning that is active, meaningful, and unforgettable.

Research continues to show that outdoor education improves academic achievement, strengthens critical thinking, supports physical and mental well-being, and builds confidence, resilience, and a lifelong appreciation for the natural world. We've seen those benefits firsthand over the past six years.

As one of Southwest Michigan's leaders in outdoor education, we're proud to provide an educational experience where curiosity is encouraged, adventure is embraced, and every child is inspired to explore.
