Tomorrow! Join us on Friday, April 5, from 6 to 8 p.m., in 1750 Sangren Hall! Come meet the award-winning author, producer, director, and activist Curtis Chin, to hear him discuss his book, "Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant: A Memoir" with our special guest, Dr. Reetha Raveendran, associate VP for student affairs and dean of students.

This book is about his experience growing up Asian in Detroit and coming out to his working class, immigrant family. This book also focuses on being a first-generation college student at a predominantly white institution. The Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Asian Initiatives have also generously donated copies of the book to be given away to the first 20 attendees. Curtis will be doing book-signing at the event.

Please join the Asian Pacific American Student Association (APASA) and Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority, Inc. in welcoming Curtis back to WMU. Funding for this event is provided by Western Student Association Allocations Commission and the Mentoring for Success Program.

Dear Students and Colleagues:

We are conducting a study on the lived experiences of Asian international/Asian American students in U.S. higher education since the onset of COVID (March 2020). This study has been approved by HSIRB.

Even before COVID, the voices of Asian/Asian American students were largely unheard, being labeled the “model minority” and considered one large homogenous group.

Help us reach as many students, undergraduate and graduate, across the United States so that we have many voices and stories of the experiences of Asian/Asian American students. Attached is a flyer with a link (https://bit.ly/3DNpwSG) and a QR code to our survey; please forward to colleagues, student groups, students, and social media.

Thank you,

Donna Talbot, PhD.

Time for another countdown to Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Heritage Month Inspiration! This inspiration is by our Secretary Amy Nobouphasavanh!

Nathan Chen is an Asian American Olympic figure skater. He is the 2022 Winter Olympic champion, a three-time World champion, the 2017 Four Continents champion, a three-time Gran Prix Final champion, and more.

Why he is an inspiration to me: Nathan Chen inspires me because of how amazing his programs are and how hard working he is with not only his figure skating career but also his academics.

Our next APIDA Month Inspiration is by our President Mari Skinner :

Ali Wong is an Asian-American comedian of Chinese and Vietnamese decent. She is mostly known for her Netflix stand up specials. Although she is known for her crass comedic standup, behind the camera she also helped write for “Fresh off the Boat” and starring and writing for the Netflix movie “Always be my Maybe”.

I chose Ali Wong because she was someone that I looked up to when I first discovered her work. She didn’t fit the “model minority” stereotype but still proved to be successful in her own way, which I admired.

Check out another APIDA inspiration from our Eboard member Nicholis, as part as our celebration of APIDA MONTH!

Troy Polamalu is a former American football player who played for the Pittsburgh steelers for 12 years. He is an American Samoan descent.

He inspires me because ever since I was a little kid, I would watch football because he was playing and inspired me to played football through middle school and high school, which I really enjoyed.
