She gave a wonderfully informative and inspiring talk about her research and was honored at the College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Achievement Award Luncheon today.

Congratulations to PhD student Shekira Edgar on her first journal publication, Amplifying Student Voice for Authentic Belonging! Please join us in congratulating her on this important accomplishment. Her co-authors on this National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) journal for teachers were Dr. Imani Goffney, University of Maryland-College Park, and WMU faculty member Dr. Laura Van Zoest. On Monday we welcomed the new academic year and new members of our WMU math department community with a kickoff luncheon with mathematical games and puzzles!

We got to know each other and also got to preview a small sample of the activities we will have at the Kalamazoo Math Carnival this coming November 21st, an event organized by math department faculty member, Dr. Mariana Levin and hosted by the WMU Mathematics Department.

Looking forward to a wonderful year ahead!

These are some pictures from the Mathematics Department TA Orientation and Professional Development last Tuesday and Wednesday. We will continue this Monday with the last day of training.

We are ready and happy to start this year. Remember, classes start on September 2nd. Wishing you a great and successful 2026-2027 academic year!

🇮🇩 🇺🇸.:: Pujiyanto's Dissertation Defense ::. 🇺🇸 🇮🇩

On July 23rd, Pujiyanto successfully defended his dissertation titled "Developing Symbol Sense: An Analysis of Students’ Reading Through Symbols of Algebraic Equations in a Developmental Mathematics Course."

Puji has markedly supported research and teaching on student algebraic symbol sense during his doctoral journey, impacting multiple classroom spaces in our department and beyond.

Congratulations to Dr. "Puji"!!! We are so thrilled with the amazing work you have done, and we are looking forward to seeing your upcoming professional achievements and contributions to our field.

Congratulations to PhD candidate Offir Romero Castro for winning the 2025-2026 WMU College of Arts and Sciences Diversity and Inclusion Student Writing Prize for his paper, "The DisPer Framework: Describing Mathematics Teacher Perceptions Toward Disabilities and Students with Disabilities"! 👏

The first Arabic Edition of the Kalamazoo Math Carnival held this past weekend was a success!

This event was organized by Dr. Mariana Levin and WMU Math Ed Masters student Seham Al-Sidran and hosted by the WMU Math Department.

Seham is a gifted teacher in Saudi Arabia with a passion for mathematics and making mathematics accessible to others. After Seham and her children attended the Kalamazoo Math Carnival last November, Seham approached Dr. Levin about working together in the spring. They developed the idea of creating Arabic language versions of some of the materials from the first carnival and then piloting the materials in a small-scale culminating event for families in the Arabic speaking community in Kalamazoo as part of a course project. With the success of this first event, they are now dreaming about what is next!

Stay tuned for other events and join us Saturday November 7 for the next carnival.
