What an incredible night! A huge mahalo to everyone who came out to make last night’s PTSA Family Bingo Night a wonderful success. It was so awesome seeing our Kailua ʻohana together under one roof. Nights like these remind us how special our Kailua Elementary community really is! 💚🐢

All Hawai‘i State Department of Education public schools and offices on Oʻahu and in Kauaʻi County will be closed Tuesday, Sept. 8, due to anticipated weather conditions and their potential impacts on safe school operations.

All school-related activities in the affected counties scheduled for Tuesday are also canceled, including athletic events and practices, extracurricular activities, meetings and other school events.

Standing up, working together, and thinking deeply! ✏️🧩

Our 1st graders are taking their math learning to the walls using the Building Thinking Classrooms approach! Working on vertical whiteboards in small random groups keeps their minds active, encourages rich math talk, and makes problem-solving visible and collaborative.

Seeing our young mathematicians explain their thinking, erase mistakes without fear, and try new strategies together is pure magic! ✨🔢

How do you make a toy car zoom farther? Ask our kindergartners! 🏎️🔍

Our Kinder scholars dove into forces and motion this week. Using ramps, they compared a big push to a gentle push and worked together to invent ways to pull their cars up the ramp. We love seeing our kinder students practice being Complex Thinkers and hands-on problem solvers so early in the school year! 👏📚✨

Our 5th-grade teacher, Mr. Thacker, spent his Friday diving deep into a Windward District Professional Development session focused on Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) and launching the Lesson Study model! (A big mahalo to the guest teacher who covered his 5th graders so he could attend!)

PD Highlights from Dave’s Day:

✏️ BTC in Action: Worked through two hands-on thinking tasks from the student perspective.

🍕 Thin & Thick Slicing: Explored how to carefully sequence and scaffold math tasks to build deep, independent problem-solving skills.

🤝 Lesson Study Co-Planning: Matched with a course partner to co-design a lesson that will be observed and refined during an upcoming peer learning cycle.

What to look for in 5th grade: Back in his classroom, Mr. Thacker will be putting these 14 BTC practices into action using vertical whiteboards, visibly random student groups, single-indicator rubrics, and rich thinking tasks. We’re excited to see his 5th graders thinking, collaborating, and problem-solving every day! 🐢💚
