It’s not easy at a young age to wrap your head around the seriousness & responsibility we carry as divers in a community where the leading cause of water-related deaths among locals has been freediving & spearfishing — but today’s class of students with showed up early on their Saturday morning, eager, gracious, & excited to learn. 🙌🏽

It’s an injustice & a tragedy that in a state that generates so much money, many local kids lack access to lifesaving education & tools that would allow them to recreate, subsist off of, & connect to their community’s ocean safely. Most of today’s students had either personally experienced a close call with a blackout, or were personally affected by one of the many preventable tragedies in our community. After today, they are properly trained in basic freediving safety, & understand how to anticipate, recognize, & respond to hypoxic incidents like blackouts & near-blackouts. It was really special seeing their eyes light up with excitement for the opportunity to learn & be empowered with this lifesaving knowledge. 🙏🏽

Today’s training meant the world to these kids & their families — thank you to & its passionate leader , whose commitment to this mission is changing headlines, saving countless lives, & imparting kids with a connection to the ocean that will likely shape the rest of their lives. Her work changes our lives as instructors too as we get to witness & be part of this growth. ❤️

Every child in Hawai’i deserves a healthy, supportive environment & the knowledge to subsist from & recreate in the ocean safely.

Congratulations on your new three prong from !!! 😱

Freediving doesn’t just take us to a depth beneath the surface — it takes us to a place inside ourselves.

A place where calm meets courage; a place that leaves me confounded by the ocean’s power to reveal the power that exists inside ourselves. Our bodies can do incredible things when we meet the strength of our own minds.

Humans need the ocean, scientifically, in so many physical & biological ways, but when I freedive, I feel a sense that it’s intrinsically connected to who we are and our relationships on Earth. Yes, the ocean gives us life, but I feel like more than that, it brings life to what it means to be alive: To be connected to ourselves & others.

In eroding the natural world, we’ve lost a part of ourselves, & in the ocean, I feel that missing piece heal. 🫶 I feel reunited with what it means to be alive in this world. 🖤

Freediving offers a special connection to the ocean & ourselves — that connection starts with the relationships we build with our dive partners.

Our relationship with our dive partners is literally the foundation of everything we experience freediving — it’s the difference between loving this sport safely & sharing unimagineable underwater experiences together because you’re both properly trained & practicing direct supervision; or suffering a tragic, permanent loss that could have been easily prevented with the knowledge & skills acquired in a 2 day long class.

It’s the difference between telling their loved ones stories of joy from your day in the water together, or telling their loved ones you lost them forever.

This is my dive partner, Alyssa. One week after taking her Lv. 1 Freedive class, she saved my life. That we are still diving together, smiling in the ocean & living our joyful lives, is the difference I’m referring to above.

We weren’t freediving, but I think our story shows the significance of proper training & how profoundly ocean safety education impacts our lives. There’s no words that can describe how scary it is to find yourself so immediately humbled by the ocean — 7 years of ocean lifeguarding, a lifetime of surfing & swimming, a decade working in ocean safety — one rock to the head was all it took. The ocean doesn’t discriminate & it can humble anyone — Alyssa’s presence, training & supervision saved my life. Her course prepared her to respond effectively amidst the stress of seeing her friend floating face down, unconscious & unresponsive in the water.

If you want to experience a special connection to the ocean, start by building strong relationships with dive partners that are rooted in proper safety training & real trust/respect. We can’t control the ocean, but we can equip ourselves to mitigate the risks that accompany her beautiful wildness & untamable nature.

Join me with your buddy, or meet properly trained buddies, in one of my upcoming courses:
Lv. 1 July 8th - 9th, 2 spots
Junior Freediver, July 27th-28th, FULL

Watching students grow in their own unique ways — from their overall aquatic ability, confidence, and comfort; to their knowledge of hypoxic incidents & ability to execute lifesaving safety skills — is the greatest gift this sport has given me. Big smiles all around because these Lv. 1 Freedive students grew so much over the course of just 2 days & I got experience it with them!!! 🫶🥰

As hard as most freedivers try to “dive within our limits,” the reality is that blackouts can happen to any diver, on any day, on any dive, at shallow depths, & there are simply too many variables to account for — from our diet, stress level, sleep & beyond — to effectively mitigate the risk of a blackout or other hypoxic incident occurring. We CAN however choose to equip ourselves with proper freediving safety education & gain a skillset that is literally lifesaving. It’s not hard information to learn, but it’s not intuitive, & it needs to be learned in a structured, standardized environment with hands-on repetition & practice.

Modern freediving education saves lives — sign up for a summer class with your dive partner & get trained on how to recognize & respond to hypoxic incidents so that everyone gets to continue enjoying a sport we love & go home safe. Spots open in my courses July 8-9th & July 22nd-23rd in Kona! 🙌🏽
