Novak on his son playing tennis:

''He’s good. Look, I want to be his father, not his coach. If this is the journey he chooses, I’ll support him one million percent, every step of the way. I think tennis is a great school of life. If his son wants to play tennis, it is a great idea to try to become a professional. I would advise it.''

If I were Novak, I would probably say the same. If that’s what he wants, I’ll support it 100%.

The mission of parents is to support their kids and show them how much they believe in them. When you become the coach, you often have to take that extra step for them. You want to be part of it, but I think that is very dangerous.

Sometimes it works, of course. There are great examples of parents who succeeded. But when the parent is also the coach, there is no emotional distance. They go through the same negativity, and that can destroy the relationship.

I think the relationship between parents and children is much more important than the relationship between coach and player. Novak can use his tennis knowledge by choosing the right people around his son. That is the best way to help him.
