We once had a thriving group of female martial artists training in the BJJ program at our gym and I always told our core members that they were here for a reason. They felt safe and appreciated in a sport where that is not always the case. Since I have been absent a lot, things have changed. Many of them have moved off to other gyms or left the sport altogether. This is very upsetting to me because I have always felt that the most vulnerable members of our society need our training the most. We should always make them feel comfortable, welcomed and respected. To all the former female team mates of Maui Martial Arts I offer my sincere apologies and my promise that things are about to change drastically. Making tough decisions is always difficult but it must be done if one desires to pursue excellence. Read this article and believe it because it holds true.
