The goal of Project Hōkūlani is to increase the number of Native Hawaiian
youth who enter into STEM fields by hosting a year-long, culture-based and work-based program on O’ahu, Moloka’i and Hawai’i Island.

As part of our annual STEM Summer Camp, high school students took a field trip to the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). Our students learned advice from current medical students, engaged in CPR training, explored heart health with blood pressure cuffs, and expanded their knowledge about Native Hawaiian medical practices.

We are extremely grateful to JABSOM for hosting our students, and we hope to see you again next year!

To celebrate and conclude our Summer internships, students presented what they learned at our annual Hōkūlani Hōʻike. Students, parents, mentors, and Hōkūlani staff gathered together at the University of Hawaiʻi and online, to share what they completed. Students achieved a numerous amount of accomplishments – naming galaxies, becoming co-authors on medical research papers, developing user-ready applications, and improving their self confidence, public speaking, and time management skills.

Our monthly PIER speaker series is back!

For our first session, Dr. Angel Ramos will share his insights on how to achieve inclusive STEM education for Deaf and Blind students. With a 10 year career as the Principal of the Hawaiʻi School for the Deaf and the Blind, he will also share advice for all people on how we can become critical allies for an incluisve world.

For our final day of Summer Camp, we learned about restoration efforts from experts at Chaminade University. Our students made seed balls out of soil and ʻaʻaliʻi seeds, which will be planted in future restoration efforts. We met with Chaminade tour guides, who showed our students various STEM pathways and opportunities to study at Chaminade.

The alakaʻi at Ka Papa Loʻi ʻO Kānewai shared their ʻike and moʻolelo with our students at our mālama ʻāina work day. Students pulled weeds and worked together to clear leaves from the poʻowai to the hoʻiwai. We helped the water to flow into all of the loʻi, and learned a lot about the importance of wai. On Friday, our friends at Kapiʻolani Community College (KCC) guided us on tours of their STEM specialties. Students met with the KCC STEM Career center, and talked story with experts in the fields of Medical Assisting, Māla Management, and Radiology. In the afternoon, Project Hōkūlani Kumu guided the students through sustainability lessons, testing how different materials affect water and coral quality.

🩺 On Day 4, we headed over to the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) to meet with the Directors of Native Hawaiian Health. We talked story about their māla, engaged in CPR training simulations, and learned about blood pressure monitoring. We also met with JABSOM medical students, who shared their inspirational journeys to the path of medicine.

On Day 3 of our annual STEM Summer Camp, we headed to Windward Community College to immerse ourselves in their imaginarium and learn about wayfinding.

We were joined by the Stargazers of Hawaiʻi, who set up their telescopes and taught our students how to search for celestial objects and mountain ranges. In the afternoon, we used Virtual Reality headsets to take a closer look at Nā ʻOhana Hōkū ʻEhā (the Four Star Families), and explored lessons on light and space. ⭐️💡
