ASK THE DOC: Can leg elevation prevent blood clot (DVT)?
Great question Allison! The answer is YES! Homans was the first to recommend leg elevation to prevent DVT in 1939 (1). Subsequent studies, including one from Duke, showed it to be more effective than some other modalities (2). It makes sense because leg elevation increases venous blood flow, and stasis (low blood flow) is one of the main risk factors for DVT. .
