Florida Atlantic University Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute Inaugurated in 2016 under the leadership of Executive Director Randy D.

The FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute stimulates advanced neuroscience research, promotes superior neuroscience education, facilitates the translation of research discoveries for the benefit of society, and enhances public understanding. Blakely, Ph.D., the FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute is a physical and programmatic embodiment of the FAU Neuroscience Pillar. Pillars represent mission foundations that help orient FAU academic research investments in areas with the greatest potential for impact across the multiple dimensions of the institution, and that, fully realized, can positively impact the health of our communities. Neuroscience, the study of nervous systems throughout evolution and across the lifespan, seeks insights into fundamental questions of brain development, plasticity and disease, with efforts that address the mechanisms by which we establish and share our humanity, and that can provide solutions to the constraints on our well-being imposed by physiological and cultural limitations. The Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute supports state-of-the-art research and innovative educational activities of more than 100 neuroscience faculty-level investigators located at FAU and its affiliate research centers, and is the sponsor for the Neuroscience Graduate Program and the FAU Neuroscience Student Organization (NSO).

📢 New Research Grant Announcement 🧠

FAU neuroscientist Dr. Laura Fontenas received a ~$450K grant from the NIH to study the production of myelin - the protective insulation surrounding nerve fibers in the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves.

The study will focus on newly discovered glial cells in the spinal cord that produce myelin and could provide a new avenue for understanding diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

Congratulations to Dr. Nicole Baganz, Director of Community Engagement, for her nomination for a Woman of the Year Award by the Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce!

Dr. Baganz leads our ASCEND initiative - a comprehensive suite of programs for learners of all ages that are designed to spark curiosity and break down barriers between neuroscience research and public understanding. ASCEND programs and events have reached over 60,000 people across South Florida, including thousands of children attending Title I schools. ASCEND's MobileMinds program, was recently honored with the Innovation Award at Palm Beach Illustrated's annual Education Awards.

Dr. Baganz is also a strong proponent of eliminating the stigma associated with mental health disorders, sharing a personal and scientific perspective on mental illness through the lens of neuroscience. She currently serves on the board of directors for NAMI Palm Beach County and leads Florida Atlantic's NAMIWalks team each year to raise funds for mental health support programs in Palm Beach County.
