How many times should you take the SAT? This is a common question among high school students. While there’s no single right answer, a good general guideline is to take the test at least twice, but usually no more than four times.
There are two main reasons for this recommendation. First, your initial score often isn’t your highest potential score. With focused studying or tutoring, many students see meaningful improvement on a second or even third attempt. Retaking the SAT gives you the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned and perform with greater confidence.
Second, although there’s no official limit to how many times you can take the SAT, most students see diminishing returns after about four attempts. Beyond that point, significant score increases are unlikely, and repeated testing can become unnecessarily stressful.
Additionally, nearly 60% of colleges and universities now offer superscoring, which allows you to submit your highest section scores across multiple test dates. This policy can further reduce the pressure to achieve your best possible score in a single sitting.
