We are extremely excited to announce that the 2027 Boating Safety Educators' Symposium will be held in Juneau on January 26 and 27!

Coast Guard Sector Southeast has received a report of an overdue Fishing Vessel SIERRA DAWN 32ft vessel out of Petersburg, AK. The operator of the vessel is Bruce Sorenson, 60 year old male. The vessel was supposed to go from Duncan Canal to the vicinity of Coronation Island for fishing. The vessel was last seen at approximately 1200 Local on Friday March 13th.

Ben Fowler and Sidney Mohorovich were reported deceased on March 15th while operating aboard a barge under tow, outside of Ketchikan, Alaska.

As an organization that focuses on preventing disaster, we strongly believe that all accidents can be avoided with proper procedural training. But we don't often think of the invisible hazards that are present in maritime environments, and I have never participated in a training course that mentions hazardous gas dangers in a curriculum.

Starting today, SABER will take the time to incorporate hazardous gas and exposure education to our safety curriculum. We feel it's the most effective way to honor these two gentlemen.

We dive deep into all things 'maritime safety' and review every fatal accident that is reported to the USCG, so you don't have to.

Message from SABER Director, Luke Holton:

"I am deeply saddened by the drowning of Kaipo Kaminanga in Red Cove Lake. Any loss of life in the cold waters of Alaska is a traumatic road of grief for the surviving family and friends. When it's a young teenager, it hits even harder. Here are some key points to remember about cold water survival and teenagers:

1. Persons under 21 years of age lose body heat faster than adults due to lower body mass, but large skin surface area.
2. Teenage boys and men are statistically more likely to experience cold water immersion.
3. Teenagers and children, 12 years of age and younger, are required to wear personal floatation devices (PFD) while aboard open vessels (skiffs, canoes, kayaks, and any vessel without an enclosed cabin).
4. Practice reentry techniques with your vessel. Each vessel is different and requires a customized plan for reentering the vessel after falling overboard. Do not rely on brute strength or helping hands. Have a swim ladder, rope ladder, or other means of entering the boat from the waterline.
5. Practice righting an inverted vessel using paddles/ oars, float bags, etc.
6. Always carry a throw-bag with floating line. So many accidents have been attributed to rescuers not having the tools or skill to safely "reach" a person overboard.
7. Carry a dry bag with dry, non-cotton attire.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, ALWAYS WEAR A PFD, REGARDLESS OF AGE!

ATTENTION JUNEAU SPORTSMEN AND SPORTSWOMEN!

Class Announcement: Beginner Sport Fishing Workshop

SEA-Guides is partnering with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to host a six-hour training seminar on sportfishing in Juneau's waterways and shorelines. If you're new to fishing, or an experienced angler new to Juneau, this class is a great place to learn the basics. You will have hands-on practice and familiarization with:

-Alaska sportfishing regulations, permits, and licensing requirements
-Local fishing spots and access areas
-Gear (downrigger, pot hauler, and rod/reel) safe operation practices
-Biological overviews of Halibut, Rockfish, 3-species of crab, and 5-species of Salmon
-Tips for targeting specific species (trolling speeds/ depths, lures, and techniques)
-Sportfishing oriented boating safety practices
-How to safely preserve fish and identify toxins
-Hygienic handling of catch
-Alaska fisheries updates and practices
