University of Alaska Southeast students find the coolest internships and jobs!

UAS Summer Experience — DIPAC Macaulay Salmon Hatchery

UAS environmental resources student, Pigeon Kearney ('25) from Petaluma, CA worked as a Fisheries Tech at the DIPAC Macaulay Salmon Hatchery this summer.

As a Fisheries Tech, Pigeon's experience included regular hatchery maintenance, rearing of fish, egg take (during summer: Chum, Coho, King), and incubation. Pigeon shared that this work experience is a great option for biology students, "It provides experience on a lot of maritime skills and local salmon species identification. It also provides a great perspective on the pros and cons of hatcheries like DIPAC."

Pigeon's highlights from this summer experience include:
⭐ "A couple weeks ago we seined Fish Creek pond for Chinook with the help of ADFG. I think we came out with around 50 Kings, which will be very important stock for egg take this week."
⭐ "Egg take this very was so much fun, but also hard work. There’s a long list of stations in the sorting table, processing room, incubation, and carcass deck, so Fisheries Techs get rotated around day-by-day to have the opportunity to get some experience in a bunch of different positions. My favorite spot was spawn, in which sedated and sorted females are cut for their eggs. Spawners determine if eggs are viable for incubators or get sent off as roe."

We’re so proud of UAS marine biology student Logan who worked with his professor and UAS Career Services to secure a coveted internship with NOAA this summer.

UAS Summer Experience — IN FISH, NOAA Inclusive Fisheries Internship

UAS marine biology student, Logan Johnson ('27) from Helena, MT was chosen for the IN FISH, internship program. IN FISH, NOAA's Inclusive Fisheries Internship program focuses on research and resource management across laboratories nationwide. IN FISH is a paid ten-week program consisting of a two-week ecosystem dynamics course, professional development activities, opportunities to network, and a research project that benefits the laboratory.

For this internship, Logan mentored under Dr. Mike Acquafredda and was stationed at Rutger University's Aquaculture Innovation Center in Maine. Logan's internship tracked the growth rates of North Atlantic surf clam and south Atlantic surf clam subspecies and the subspecies hybrids, comparing the growth rates of the larvae and juveniles states.

"I met such amazing people during this internship. Without them I wouldn’t have had as much fun. My roommate and I went to Wildwood and there was a day all of us interns went to New York City. It was so fun to see the city." - Logan
