UAS Evening at Egan: Fall series starts Friday!

Evening at Egan kicks off its five-lecture fall series with Learning and Teaching the Language of the Land: Insights from Alaskan Teachers with Chelsee Cook, Amber Frommerz, Lorrie Heagy, Roby Littlefield, Naomi Leask and Angie Lunda.

Upcoming lectures will explore high-altitude agriculture and climate, Juneau’s 2026 glacial lake outburst flood, Indigenous-settler land coalitions and more.

Join us this Friday as these Alaskan educators draw on years of collaborative work supporting the cultural identity development of Indigenous children to explore how language, values and culture intertwine. Their work has been shared globally and published across academic platforms. Attendees will gain practical ideas for how educators at any fluency level can successfully make space for Indigenous languages in their teaching.

Evening at Egan is the annual UAS lecture series held each fall, welcoming the Juneau community to engage with leading scholars and experts as they explore diverse topics and spark thought-provoking conversations.

Lectures are free and open to the public, with all events beginning at 7 p.m. in the Egan Lecture Hall and streamed live via Zoom. Recordings are available on the UAS YouTube Channel at the speaker’s discretion.

UAS Welcomes New Faculty

UAS is welcoming seven new full-time faculty members for the fall 2026 semester, bringing expertise in fields ranging from housing policy and Indigenous arts to marine power technology and educational leadership.

The incoming faculty are teaching in the lab, field, carving studio, classroom and online, while developing collaborations with local organizations to conduct research and expand hands-on learning opportunities for students.

School of Arts & Sciences

🐋 Shae Frydenlund, Assistant Professor of Alpine and Arctic Studies, teaches Perspectives on the Natural World, Mountain Studies and Outdoor Studies field courses. Her scholarship examines labour exploitation, racial capitalism and uneven development in mountain communities across Asia and the U.S.

🐋 Meghan Holtan, Assistant Professor of Public Administration, brings 12 years of experience as a planning and community health analyst. Her research focuses on housing, energy and climate adaptation in the North, including work with Alaska Tribal and public housing providers.

🐋 Eechdaa Dave Ketah, Assistant Professor of Northwest Coast Indigenous Arts, teaches carving, design and tool making. Born and raised in Ketchikan with family roots in Klawock, Ketah is excited for the opportunity to teach and support the perpetuation of his Tlingit culture.

🐋 Jason Kuhn is beginning a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Chemistry after two years as a term faculty member at UAS. He teaches general chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry.

School of Career Education

🐋 Jeremiah Blankenship, Assistant Professor of Power Technology, is a fourth-generation Alaskan and graduate of the UAS School of Career Education. He teaches marine transmissions, outboard motors and a marine auxiliary systems lab and is passionate about hands-on instruction and strengthening connections with employers, unions and industry partners.

School of Education

🐋 Robin Lockwood, Assistant Professor of Secondary and Elementary Education, is a UAS alum who teaches in the Secondary Master of Arts in Teaching and Elementary Education programs and mentors teacher candidates. Her background includes outdoor and environmental education, marine science and experiential learning.

🐋 Cindy McKibben, Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership, brings 17 years of experience in Alaska’s K-12 public education system. She teaches in the Master of Educational Leadership Program and beyond and is helping launch the Registered Principal Apprenticeship Program.

“We’re thrilled to welcome these new faculty to UAS,” said UAS Provost Scott Billingsley. “I’m excited about the expertise and energy they bring in fields so connected with Alaska’s coastal cultures, economies and environments.”

New Leaders at UAS Drive Student Opportunities and Community Partnerships in First Months on the Job

Four new leaders are helping guide UAS into the new academic year, expanding community partnerships and opportunities for personalized, experiential learning.

Associate Vice Chancellor for Alaska Native Programs and Director of PITAAS:
Jacqueline Tagaban, M.Ed., is supporting programs that perpetuate the values and traditions of the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples and advance Alaska Native student success. Under her leadership, PITAAS has expanded to support qualifying freshmen and sophomores, in addition to juniors and seniors.

Dean of the School of Career Education:
Kristen Majocha, Ph.D., is working to develop new occupational endorsements and exploring ways to increase course offerings and reduce barriers for students through collaborations with local organizations, businesses and public entities.

Dean of the School of Education:
Koogak’aax Angela Lunda, Ph.D., has advanced innovative programs to address Alaska’s critical need for certified educators, including the newly approved Master of Arts in Teaching in Indigenous Languages and a new special education apprenticeship program.

Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services:
Sylvan Robb, M.A., joined UAS in August and oversees key university operations while helping implement strategic initiatives to streamline systems and processes and improve budget transparency.

“I have been truly inspired by the remarkable expertise, vision and collaboration that our leaders have brought to their roles,” said UAS Chancellor Aparna Palmer. “The relationships they are building are already bringing opportunities within reach of more students, while addressing critical community needs.”

Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center Student Symposium

UAS student Robbie Gabel presented his research on benthic macroinvertebrate composition in two Juneau-area creeks at the Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center Student Symposium.

Robbie was one of seven UAS student interns who spent the summer conducting field research in Juneau’s coastal wetlands and rainforests, exploring questions related to local ecology, hydrology, and resource management.

At the August 7 symposium, students shared their summer research on topics ranging from stream invertebrates and blueberries to landslide stream water chemistry, yellow cedar soils, science communication, and more.
