Training the Next Generation of Naax̱éin Weavers: A Shareholder Story

Shareholder Marion K. Carman recently shared a special story with us about her granddaughters, Isabella Ross and Patricia Dennis, and their opportunity to learn from Chilkat weavers Donedin Jackson and Rae Mills at the Goldbelt Tram.

Last month, a two-year project commissioned by the Goldbelt Tram came to fruition as Haa Shagóoní was brought to life. Roughly 60 witnesses, including shareholders, Tram employees and travelers from around the world, gathered outside the Lower Terminal for the Robe Cutting Ceremony for the Naax̱éin, or ceremonial Chilkat robe.

Weavers Donedin Jackson and Rae Mills cut their Diving Whale Robe from the loom to a Lingít welcome song, marking the culmination of two years of weaving, teaching and sharing culture with those who stopped to watch and learn.

Among those visitors were Marion and her granddaughters. After learning about the project, Marion brought Isabella and Patricia to meet the weavers. They returned several times throughout the summer of 2026, learning not only about Chilkat weaving, but also the language, materials and traditions carried through the practice.

“They were taught a lot in two months,” Marion shared. “The children were able to speak to Donedin in Tlingit. I’m so glad the girls learned how to weave Chilkat Robe and make the weaving materials.”

Marion generously shared her story and photos with us. Her experience is a meaningful example of what can happen when our traditions are practiced, shared and passed from one generation to the next.

Goldbelt is seeking proposals for the design and production of four custom hand drums featuring a unique Goldbelt-inspired design.
This is a great opportunity to create something custom for Goldbelt—meaningful, handcrafted pieces that celebrate our identity, culture, and connection to our shareholders.

We are particularly interested in hearing from Goldbelt shareholder artists, makers, and shareholder-owned businesses. The opportunity is open to all qualified vendors, with preference given to qualified shareholders and shareholder-owned businesses.

Every Donation Makes a Difference in Someone's Life.

Thank you to everyone who has already contributed to our Hunger Action Month food drive. The Southeast Alaska Food Bank is preparing for increased demand this fall, and community support is more important than ever. Some of the most-needed items include canned soups, tuna, and chicken, as well as pasta and sauce, cereal, peanut butter, and jelly.

Whether you donate one item or several, you're helping feed local families in need.

Donations can be dropped off during business hours at Goldbelt Hít, 3017 Clinton Drive, through October 1.
