🎣 Catch to Cut: Alaska’s Prized Rockfish

Yelloweye rockfish is easily one of the most prized table fish in Southeast Alaska.

Joshua () and David (David) joined us for their first time on the water in Juneau to track down some bottom fish.

We caught cod, sole, dusky rockfish, and a couple of beautiful yelloweye 🤩

Back at the dock, Joshua quickly filleted the fish like the pro he is - truly a pleasure to watch in person!

Straight from ocean to table. We dig yelloweye blackened and served as fish tacos.

🎣 Miss us? We’ve been fishing!
 
You know that feeling — so busy doing the thing, you can’t post about the thing?
 
That’s been our last 6 weeks. King salmon. Halibut. Giant cod. Whales. And some incredible folks on the boat.

🎣 Trip Report: May 28th
 
Five wonderful folks. A resident bald eagle. And the fish we’ve been waiting for all winter.
 
Since we had a little extra time, we went further northwest than usual. On the way, a sea otter drifted on its back, sea lions lounged on the famous Juneau Buoy, and a humpback whale fed near one of the smaller islands. Just another day out here.
 
Then we got to fishing. We pulled up several Atka mackerel — which, despite the name, isn’t a mackerel at all. It’s a greenling, related to kelp greenling or “kelpies,” one of Jojo’s favorites. In this species, males guard the eggs for up to 45 days, fanning them with their fins until they hatch.
 
We also landed a quillback rockfish. Beautiful fish. Makes even better tacos.
 
But the highlight? One of our guests caught the first halibut of the year. 32.5 inches — the absolute perfect size for eating. You should’ve seen their face.

🎣 Trip Report: May 24th

Five fishing pros from Maine. One beloved local whale. And a sculpin that brought up its own snack.

Before our guests even stepped on the boat, a harbor seal was already working a school of herring right beside us. On the way out, we found Flame — one of Juneau’s favorite humpbacks — cruising through her usual waters.

The fishing was slow, but nobody minded. Sometimes the best trips aren’t about the catch.

Then someone pulled up a sculpin with a tiny octopus still in its mouth. Fresh-caught, mid-meal. Nature doesn’t wait for you to be ready.

Here’s the wild part: octopuses have three hearts and blue blood. That blue comes from copper, which carries oxygen the way iron does in ours. It’s built for cold water — exactly what we’ve got out here.

As we headed back in, one of the harbor’s resident bald eagles watched us say goodbye. Classic Alaska sendoff.

🎣 Trip Report: May 11th - Afternoon

We hadn’t even dropped a line yet — and a humpback surfaced right off the bow.

That’s the thing about fishing in Southeast Alaska. The wildlife doesn’t wait for you to be ready.

We pulled up rockfish, lingcod, and something most people have eaten a hundred times but never seen fresh: po***ck. The same fish in your fish sticks, your fast food filets, your imitation crab.

Out here, it’s bright-eyed and fighting.

Oh — and we spotted a pigeon guillemot. Those orange feet are hard to miss.
