New UAS Indigenous language master’s program gets final approval from state Board of Education The Alaska State Board of Education and Early Development unanimously approved a new master’s in teaching program for Indigenous languages at the University of Alaska Southeast on Thursday.

The School of Education would like to wish everyone a wonderful Celebration 2026, Alaska’s premier Alaska Native cultural festival.

From June 3–6, thousands of Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian people will gather in Juneau for four days of culture, community, and tradition. Organized by Sealaska Heritage Institute, this biennial event showcases the richness and vitality of Indigenous cultures through song, dance, art, language, and storytelling.

Whether you are attending in person or tuning in online, Celebration offers an incredible opportunity to honor, learn from, and celebrate the cultures, traditions, and resilience of the peoples of Southeast Alaska and beyond.

Gunalchéesh, Háw’aa, and thank you to everyone who helps make this gathering possible. We wish safe travels and a meaningful Celebration to all who are participating.

We love celebrating the impact our graduates are making across Alaska! 🎉

We are excited to share new data from Cohort 16 of the UAS Educational Leadership program, highlighting the incredible leadership roles our graduates are already serving in throughout the state.

Of the 20 graduates from this cohort:
• 16 are currently serving in administrative leadership positions
• 4 are working as teachers or school counselors

Leadership roles include:
⭐ 4 School Principals
⭐ 6 Assistant Principals
⭐ 4 Coordinators
⭐ 1 Human Resources Director
⭐ 1 Superintendent

Even more exciting, 12 of the 16 graduates serving in administrative roles are working in rural Alaska communities, helping strengthen schools and educational leadership where it is needed most.

This is the meaningful impact of growing and supporting educational leaders in Alaska, for Alaska. We are incredibly proud of our graduates and grateful for the dedication of the faculty and staff who continue supporting this important work.

Registration is now open for Sealaska Heritage Institute 2026 Our Cultural Landscape: Cultural Responsive Education (CRE) Conference!

The UAS School of Education is proud to once again partner with SHI to offer participants the opportunity to earn 1 UAS professional development credit (ED 593) through conference participation.

Conference attendees seeking credit will:
✔ Attend keynote and featured speaker sessions
✔ Participate in five breakout sessions
✔ Submit a 3–5 page reflection by August 15

The ED 593 option is available for a $90 fee and may be applicable toward professional credential requirements, including Alaska teaching licensure.

SHI's conference continues to be an incredible opportunity to engage with culturally responsive education practices, Indigenous knowledge systems, and educators from across Alaska and beyond.

The UAS Educational Leadership program prepares aspiring school administrators with the skills, knowledge, and real-world experience needed to lead with confidence in Alaska’s unique educational communities.

Built around a supportive cohort model, candidates begin with an intensive three-week summer session in Juneau, continue coursework online throughout the school year while completing hands-on internship experiences, and return the following June for a final immersive summer session.

Join us on Monday, April 3rd for a presentation by Dr. Tuija Turunen titled It’s not a miracle: Teacher education and teaching in Finland.

Her presentation will describe Finland’s approach to teacher education and working conditions and support for teachers in the classroom. Finland has applied research-based best practices in teacher preparation and in education, and implemented a schooling system in which teachers are trusted as professionals who are competent in both teaching and in assessing learning.

🔷 Payment tools will only be accepting payments before the outage begins March 13 at 5:00 p.m. and after March 14.
🔷 Blackboard and Canvas for UAS will be fully available for course work during the outage window, though updates from Banner will not occur during this time, so changes to enrollments or courses cannot take place during this time. Blackboard and Canvas for UAS will be back to normal March 14.
🔷 ELMO will be available for password resets and account management
