Looking forward to the performance tomorrow evening. It's been a joy and honor to be part of this band for over a decade - indeed, an absolute blessing to enjoy playing music for over 60 years (gulp). At 73 there's no telling how much longer one can/will be doing this kind of thing, but gotta say developing the set list and rehearsing for tomorrow's show has been fun. Those inclined, hope you come out to hear our musical celebration, and welcome your participation in support of the 2024 Julian Family Fiddle Camp. See you there!

JFFC Instructor Spotlight: Mike Compton - Mandolinist. For anyone who loves bluegrass mandolin, acoustic blues, or watching a musician express himself with incredible mastery of his instrument, Mike is riveting. Many know Mike from the Nashville Bluegrass Band, John Hartford Stringband, or the kick-off mandolin voice to “Man of Constant Sorrow” from ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou.’ A mandolin master able to channel the Monroe-style playing better than anyone (according to Sam Bush), Mike is a preservationist who continues teaching the music that Bill Monroe innovated and which set the standard for generations of bluegrass mandolin players to come. A true bluegrass icon and one of the best players in acoustic music today, Mike Compton is as passionate an advocate for the mandolin as you’re ever likely to find.

JFFC Instructor Spotlight: Nat Copeland grew up in the mountains of Julian, CA. The Julian Family Fiddle Camp was his first introduction into traditional music at age seven, and his love for the fiddle stayed with him through his childhood. He sought and has been fortunate to study under fiddle masters such as Matthew Hartz, Luke Price, and Jesse Maw. At sixteen, Nat took first place in the advanced-fiddle division of the annual Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Contest, and at seventeen, he placed fifth in the Junior Division of the annual National Old Time Fiddlers Contest in Weiser, Idaho. Nat’s passion for music remains, and he now studies music in Swannanoa, NC, with a focus on bluegrass, old-time, and country styles. When not studying music, Nat teaches violin and loves kindling a passion for music in others.
