Little hands, big imaginations! 🎨

Over in our preschool, our art teacher, Mrs. Walter is with our youngest artists—our 3-year-olds—and they are diving headfirst into their very first school art projects. With a rainbow of colors, a blank canvas, and plenty of enthusiasm, these tiny creators are discovering the pure joy of bringing their ideas to life. There is nothing quite like watching a child’s face light up as they realize a blank sheet of paper can become anything they dream up.

While these masterpieces might look like pure play on the surface, early art education is actually building the foundation for a lifetime of learning. Bringing art into elementary school from the very beginning provides incredible developmental benefits:

Fine Motor Development: Pinching paintbrushes, tearing paper, and squishing clay strengthen the small muscles in little hands, directly preparing kids for holding a pencil and writing.

Brain & Sensory Connections: Visual arts stimulate brain development by helping young children process sensory information, recognize shapes and colors, and spatial reasoning.

Self-Expression & Emotional Growth: Before children have the full vocabulary to express complex feelings, art gives them an accessible, safe outlet to communicate their inner world.

Confidence & Problem-Solving: There are no wrong answers in an open-ended art project! Creating something from scratch builds self-esteem and teaches kids to experiment, adapt, and think creatively.

Focus & Patience: Completing a multi-step art project helps even our youngest learners practice concentration, follow instructions, and enjoy the reward of seeing a project through to the end.

We are so proud of our preschool artists and can't wait to see how their creativity grows throughout the school year. Be sure to check out the hallwayssoon—our local gallery is officially open!

I would like to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to Superintendent, Ryan Renquist and the Julesburg Board of Education for making the safety of our students a priority and for investing in the new fence around our playground.

As an elementary principal, there is nothing more important to me than knowing our students are safe, secure, and cared for while they are at school. Having this fence in place provides an added layer of protection that gives our staff, students, and families a much greater sense of security—and, quite honestly, a tremendous sigh of relief.

Sometimes the most meaningful investments in a school are the ones that simply help us protect what matters most: our children. This fence is more than a physical barrier; it represents a commitment to student safety and a willingness to take action to provide the safest environment possible for our students.

Thank you, Ryan, and thank you to the Julesburg Board of Education, for listening, prioritizing this need, and making it happen. I am incredibly grateful for your leadership and for the care you continually demonstrate for the students and families of Julesburg.

Thank you for putting our kids first. It truly means more than you know! 💜💛

🌟 PRIDE Student of the Week 🌟

Each week, our staff have the opportunity to shine a spotlight on a student who is living out our PRIDE values through effort and action. Our PRIDE Student of the Week is someone who demonstrates Perseverance, Responsibility, Integrity, Diligence, or Excellence—and often, a little bit of all five!

We celebrate students who keep trying when things are hard, make responsible choices, do the right thing, give their best effort, and strive to be their very best.

At Julesburg Elementary, we believe excellence isn’t about being perfect—it’s about showing PRIDE in who you are, what you do, and how you treat others. 🦁💜💛

🦁 Week One: OFF AND RUNNING! 🚀

And just like that… Week One is in the books at JES! 📚✨
From the moment our students stepped through the front doors, our teachers were OFF AND RUNNING—creating excitement, building relationships, sparking curiosity, and getting those brains working! 🧠⚡

Our classrooms were buzzing with thinking, talking, laughing, learning, and a whole lot of PRIDE! 💜💛

What a fantastic first week of school! A huge ROAR of appreciation to our incredible JES teachers for jumping in with both feet and making learning engaging from Day One. 🦁👏

Week One: DONE.
Momentum: BUILDING.
Student engagement: ON FIRE. 🔥
PRIDE: EVERYWHERE!

Here’s to an amazing year ahead! Let’s keep that momentum roaring! 🦁💜💛

🧠 Whole Brain Teaching: Learning in Motion
Miss Keli has gotten her third graders off and running this year with Chris Biffle’s Whole Brain Teaching (WBT)—and it is easy to see why her classroom is already buzzing with energy, participation, and learning!

Whole Brain Teaching is an interactive instructional approach developed by educator Chris Biffle that combines concise teacher instruction with student talk, movement, gestures, repetition, peer teaching, and active response. Rather than students simply listening to a teacher, WBT gets students actively involved in doing the thinking and teaching the learning.
One of the signature strategies is “Teach–Okay,” where the teacher gives a short burst of instruction and then students turn to a partner and teach the concept back using their own words and gestures. This gives every student an immediate opportunity to retrieve, explain, practice, and demonstrate understanding while the teacher circulates and checks for comprehension.
WBT also uses strategies such as Class–Yes, Mirror, gestures, and the Five Classroom Rules to create predictable routines and quickly capture students' attention. Because students are constantly responding, speaking, moving, listening, and explaining, the classroom becomes a place where students are participants rather than spectators.

⭐ Why This Matters
Miss Keli is doing more than creating an energetic classroom. She is creating a classroom where engagement is built into the instruction.

When students are:
👂 Listening
🗣️ Explaining
🤝 Teaching one another
✋ Responding
🧠 Retrieving information
💡 Connecting ideas
👀 Watching and monitoring their peers
🙌 Using movement and gestures to reinforce concepts
more students are actively processing the learning at the same time.

That is exactly what we mean when we say “Every Student Is Thinking.”

Miss Keli is showing us that engagement isn't simply about making learning fun—it is about making thinking visible, active, and unavoidable. Her third graders aren't just getting ready to learn… they're already doing it!
