The newly revitalized JHS Speech & Debate Team has had a big month, and we want to celebrate their work!

So far this season, the team has attended the Carthage Novice Tournament and the Seneca Tournament, marking the first time any of the participating students had ever competed in Speech & Debate. This activity provides a valuable opportunity for students to grow in their research, writing, critical thinking, and interpersonal communication skills, and joins a long tradition of Speech & Debate excellence in Joplin Schools.

đź—Ł Parents & Guardians, we hope you're planning to attend Parent-Teacher Conferences Wednesday and Thursday evening this week so you can learn about your student's progress and plans for the school year! Some conferences are being scheduled through ParentSquare sign-ups, and some are offered on a come-and-go basis or via phone or email. If you have questions about how to participate, please call your school secretary.

We're looking forward to sharing about all of the great things happening in your students’ classrooms!

Earlier this month the combined Joplin Middle Schools 8th Grade Marching Band competed in their first parade of the year, and we're so proud of their work! They marched in the MSSU Homecoming Parade and performed “Shake It Off,” by pop artist Taylor Swift. The students did an outstanding job and earned 1st place in their division.

The middle school marching band program has grown and flourished under the direction of our middle school band directors Maggie Moncado (North), Cheri Wright (East) and Chandler Glasgow (South). There are about 80 eighth grade marching band members, including color guard. The group meets one day for off-campus rehearsal outside of the regular school day to prepare for their marching season.

Happy Saturday, Eagle Nation! It's time to celebrate one of our amazing Support Staff Stars!

Our October Support Staff Star winner is Kayley Burdge, from Soaring Heights Elementary School. Kayley was nominated by a parent, who said:

"Mrs. Burdge is always willing to do whatever it takes to ensure the student she is paired with has access to education. She works with a student who is significantly visually impaired. She’s always willing to challenge him to be independent and ready to support him when he needs it. She always does it with a joy that’s contagious! She is a constant ray of positivity and kindness. She is reliable, willing to learn, and always supportive."

Kayley, we are so thankful you’re a part of Eagle Nation, and proud of the important work you accomplish each day to ensure your students have access to the best education.

We've had a great National School Lunch Week and our students have opinions! These kiddos from Irving Elementary shared their lunchtime favorites, their gratitude for the cafeteria staff, and their overwhelming cuteness.

Any time we can pair up younger Eagles with older Eagles, the results are a hit!

First graders in a few South Zone elementary schools recently put their imaginations to work designing their very own monsters, and South Middle School 7th graders brought those creations to life by sewing stuffed versions of their designs in FACS class. But the best part? The delivery! ❤️

Participating FACS students took a field trip to personally deliver the finished monsters to the first graders who dreamed them up. Seeing their drawings transformed into real stuffed animals makes for some special moments.

Now in its fourth year, this project continues to be a wonderful opportunity for creativity, collaboration, and connection between our younger and older students.
We love seeing our Eagles use their talents to bring a little joy to others! Many thanks to SMS FACS teacher Mrs. Payne for guiding this process from start to finish. 🦅

Start in Joplin Schools...and go anywhere!

Students in the Health Occupations class at JHS were recently visited by JHS Class of 2020 graduate and current EMT/Paramedic Jakob Arnold. Jakob presented about the career pathway of EMT and Paramedic work, then gave the students hands-on training in emergency intubation techniques. Allowing students to explore a wide variety of possible futures for themselves is one way Joplin Schools continues to invest not only in our students, but also the future of our community.

Thank you, Jakob, for being a great representation of what our Joplin Eagles go on to become and for encouraging the next generation of Joplin graduates!

The Joplin High School Class of 1986 held their 40-Year Class Reunion earlier this month during Homecoming, and it was great to have them back! Several of them came to the Homecoming football game, toured Joplin High School, met up at some old (and new) favorite spots around town, and reminisced about their years in Joplin while cheering for the next generations of Joplin Schools students.

We love our Joplin Schools alumni! Thank you for coming home again and for always supporting Eagle Nation. 🦅
