Today we commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11. The call of first responders was at an all time high that day.
It was a great reminder of how important it is to unite as a country, work together, and the honor and sacrifice first responders make in their line of duty. Our Fall 2026 Law Enforcement Academy recruits represented well at today's event.
Special Note: Speaker Chief Dagnan, the MSSU Choir Ensemble, and the trumpeter made today's event amazing.

🌟 Alumni Spotlight: Marady Anderson 🌟

From competing in Mock Trial at MSSU to excelling at one of the nation's top law schools, Marady Anderson is making the most of every opportunity that comes her way.

Currently a rising 2nd year law student at Washington University School of Law, Marady is building an impressive record of leadership & involvement. This year she will serve as VP of the Labor & Employment Student Organization, compete w/ the Mock Trial Team, & contribute as a member of the Jurisprudence Review Journal.
Recently, Marady interned with the National Labor Relations Board, gaining valuable hands-on experience in labor law & seeing firsthand how legal principles impact workplaces and communities.

💬 "My favorite thing about MSSU is just how tight-knit the community is. The professors went out of their way to form connections with us as students. Having the opportunity to learn how to form a community with those around me has helped me stand out throughout my career."

Marady also fondly remembers her time on the MSSU Mock Trial Team. "Some of my favorite memories come from late nights at competitions practicing over gas station treats."

Her advice for current students? Try anything & everything.
✅ Take advantage of every opportunity.
✅ Do not wait until you feel "ready" to take a chance.
✅ Get involved beyond the classroom.
✅ Remember that growth happens through experiences, service, leadership, & participation.

Marady's journey is a wonderful reminder that success is often built through curiosity, involvement, & the willingness to step outside your comfort zone. We are incredibly proud to see her continuing to thrive in law school & look forward to following her future accomplishments.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Dr. Alla Barry, a beloved professor of biology at Missouri Southern State University. Dr. Barry passed away following a tragic boating accident.

Dr. Barry leaves a lasting impact on the lives of the countless Missouri Southern State University students who she taught, mentored and inspired. Her commitment to her students and meaningful contributions to the university will be part of her tremendous legacy. She will be greatly missed by her colleagues, students and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Counseling services are available to students who may be struggling with this loss. Support is available in Billingsly Student Center, Room 347, or by calling 417-625-9559. During this difficult time, faculty and staff may reach out to Director of Human Resources, Derek Collier, for support and available employee resources.

TWO AGENCIES ARE STILL AVAILABLE TO HOST INTERNS FOR FALL 2026:
1. Joplin Police Department
2. MSSU Campus Police Department

We are accepting applications through Monday, August 10 - please help spread the word to any students who might be interested.

To apply, submit a single PDF document with the following:
• A polished resume
o It is strongly recommended that students meet with Career Services to review their resume before submission. Students with professional, polished, modern resumes are more likely to secure internships. A resume is the first opportunity to make an impression - we want it to be a good first impression and not that the person is disorganized, unprofessional, and ill-prepared to transition into the workforce.
• A brief cover letter discussing their interest in the internship. (1/2 - 1 page)
• The PDF file name should include the applicant's name.

Application packets should be emailed to [email protected] by Monday, August 10 for priority consideration. Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled, but those received by the priority deadline will be given first consideration.

Internship Details
• Selected applicants will earn 4 credit hours of CJ 0491 - Internship in Criminal Justice
o Prerequisite: Junior or senior standing, department approval, cumulative GPA 2.5, and a CJ GPA 3.2. Exceptions must be approved by the department.
• Selected applicants must submit to a background check, fingerprinting, and will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement, agreeing to keep department information confidential.
• Weekly internship schedules in site will be negotiated with agencies.
