Hamptonville – Roger Leon Groce, 82, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2021. He was born January 29, 1939 in Yadkin County to the late Burley and Lola Whitaker Groce. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Groce; nephew, Joey Groce. Surviving is his wife of 53 years, Judy Brown Groce; children, Chrissie Groce, Richard Groce, Abigail Groce (Chad Sharp); grandchildren, Mary Ann (Marcus) Wilmoth, Wyatt Holden, Jake Groce, Kasey Groce; great grandchildren, Jared Wilmoth, Jonah Wilmoth; brothers, Harvey Groce and Billy Groce.

Laura Margaret Triplett Gilliam, 80, went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 2, 2020. She was born February 21, 1940 to the late Joel Trent Triplett and Hyacinth Barney Triplett. Laura graduated from Jonesville High School in 1958. She loved her classmates, and playing basketball and softball. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Walter Gilliam; sisters, Jean Groce, Peggy Stanley; brothers, Jimmy Triplett, and Donald Triplett. Surviving are her children, Brian (Brenda) Gilliam, Kelly (Becca) Gilliam, Chris Gilliam; grandchildren, Laura (Bryan) Snow, Jonathan (Sally) Gilliam, Reece Gilliam, Bryce Gilliam; great grandchildren, Jenna Parsons, Amzie Snow, Jayme Snow, Annie Gilliam, Ellie Gilliam, Sammy Gilliam; sister, Betty Martin; brother, Larry Triplett; and several nieces and nephews.

Class of 1958 (our friend Bobby Dezern) Rest In Peace old friend.

Mr. Bobby Joe Dezern, 80, passed away at Trellis Supportive Care on March 18, 2020. Bobby was born on October 23, 1939, to Eddie Dezern and Martha Sue Daisy Fowler Dezern in Jonesville, NC. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Louise Phelps Dezern. Surviving are his son, Chris Dezern; daughter, Laura Dezern Cooper and husband, Michael; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Windell Dezern; sister, Opal Brown; and a large, extended family. A private, family service will be held. Interment will be at Pfafftown Christian Church cemetery.

U.S. Veteran
Yadkinville- Mr. Wilbur Cornelius Evans, 78, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born November 13, 1941 in Yadkin County to the late Hubert L. and Ila Layne Evans. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Minnie Sue Wagoner Evans on July 14, 1994, by his brother Bobby Joe Evans and his sister, Frankie Blackburn. Surviving are his beloved son, Scott R. Evans and wife, Jane of Winston-Salem; 3 grandchildren who were his sunshine and the joy of his life, Samuel, Kate, and Rachel Evans; brothers, Ed ( the late Janet) Evans, Pfafftown, Gerald (Ruth) Evans and Allen (Connie) Evans all of Jonesville; a sister, Katie (Homer) Shockley, Winston-Salem; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Wilbur was employed by McLean Trucking and Consolidated Freightways with a total of 31 years of service. He retired from Wake Forest Baptist Health Sciences with 13 years of service. He was a loving father and PaPa. Wilbur loved Southern Gospel Music and was a member of the original Shady Grove Quartet. He also sang in the church choir for a number of years. He was a member of Maple Springs Baptist Church and attended Shady Grove Baptist Church as his health permitted. Wilbur served 4 years in the U.S. Navy with the Naval Security Group Oceanographic Monitoring Station during the Vietnam War in Scotland and Japan, and was a member of American Legion Post 336.

Jonesville- Mr. Barry Lee Gilliam, 71, of Kirk Lane passed away peacefully Friday, April 12, 2019 at the SECU Hospice Care Center of Yadkin. He was born June 24, 1947 in Surry County to the late Raymond Egbert and Selma Gatton Gilliam. Mr. Gilliam was a graduate of Jonesville High School where he excelled as an athlete in Football and Basketball. He was a veteran of the US Army serving in the Vietnam War and was a member of Yadkin VFW Post 10346. Upon his return after Vietnam, he worked for several years with Chatham Manufacturing, Elmore’s of Elkin, and served several years as the Mayor of the Town of Arlington. Mr. Gilliam loved sports and was very competitive. He was an avid golfer, umpire for several softball leagues and tournaments in the area, and enjoyed playing cards with his special friends. He recently worked as grounds keeper with Yadkin Country Club, and operated the driving range in Jonesville. Mr. Gilliam had a huge heart and very giving spirit, which was shown by his willingness to help others that suffered from P.T.S.D. and mentoring several youth in the area. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Columbia Groce and two brothers, Dizzy Gilliam and Johnny Gilliam. Surviving are his sisters, Margaret G. (Maylen) Simmons, Jonesville; Nancy (Kent) Brown, Hamptonville; grandson, Cody Rogers, Jonesville; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 PM Monday at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Jonesville. His funeral service will follow the visitation at 3:00 PM Monday in the Gentry Family Chapel. Burial will follow in the Arlington First Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Rites by Yadkin VFW Post 10346. The family would like to express their gratitude to his caregivers, Shyanne Harris and Emily Hunt, and also to the nurses and staff of SECU Hospice Care Center of Yadkin, for their loving care.
