The “neck hump” can have multiple causes and contributing factors.

But from a musculoskeletal standpoint, chronic forward positioning is only part of the conversation.

Your world is in front of you. Your patients are in front of you. Forward forces on the neck are unavoidable—even when you’re sitting relatively upright.

So the answer isn’t trying to hold yourself in a “perfect” posture for 8 hours.

Move. Change positions. Build strength and capacity.

Even very short movement resets throughout the workday can help break up prolonged static loading.

Your best posture is your next posture.

Build capacity in muscular tissue to withstand longer postures in the op without fatigue.

08/06/2026

Your neck doesn’t just need to feel looser—it needs more capacity. Try this quick operatory reset between patients and build the muscles that support your posture all day long. Save this for your next difficult patient. đŸ’ȘđŸŠ·

đŸŠ·Remember you don’t have to do allll the things to be injury free in the op. Pick a few exercises you like and switch it up often. Variability in resets=Variability in movement=Pain free.

🚹What if tightness isn’t just a flexibility issue—but a capacity issue? Train the muscles that work all day, don’t only stretch just the ones that feel tight. đŸ€“Learn more through my live Ergonomics & Posture seminars, Chairside Ergonomics courses, and The Dental Longevity App to build strength, resilience, and longevity in the operatory.

đŸ’«Shoulder longevity in the operatory starts with better shoulder blade control—small daily habits can make a big difference over a long career.

Standing isn’t the enemy.

Sitting isn’t the enemy.

Staying in one position for too long is.

Whether you’re sitting on a saddle stool or standing during procedures, your muscles gradually fatigue when they’re asked to do the same thing for hours.

When you notice your feet beginning to ache or feel heavy, don’t just push through it.

Take 20–30 seconds and perform:

* 10 heel raises
* 10 toe raises

These simple movements activate the muscles of the foot and lower leg, giving them a chance to contract, relax, and share the workload before you return to your patient.

Remember

Prepared posture—not perfect posture.

Your best posture is your next posture.

đŸ”„The demands of dentistry aren’t changing—your body can. Build the strength, endurance, and resilience to thrive through every procedure with my upcoming 6-Week Dental Strength & Conditioning Program.

đŸ€”Instead of only asking:
“How do I release this muscle?”

Try asking:
“How do I make this muscle more resilient?”

Relief has its place.
đŸ‘đŸ»Capacity is what keeps you working.
