I thought it was time to let everyone know how much we are enjoying ourselves teaching at Bear Creek Senior Center. We do classes on Tuesday morning and Wednesday afternoon, and at the moment both classes are full. We have met some wonderful people there who are both beginners and seasoned artists alike. We also have students who followed us from the shop...instead of their classes being at Starr's, now they're at the Senior center. Several have been with us over 20 years, and yes, they can paint really well on their own, but enjoy the other students and the social aspect of the classes. Some meet early and have lunch at a local restaurant (or at the center), and lasting friendships have certainly been made. It means a lot to John and I that students consider us friends, and we absolutely consider them our extended family. I will try to check in here more often, and thank you all for sharing John's paintings with your FB friends, we still need to keep his art in front of people.

As of today, January 20th, we haven't heard any news as to when the Senior Center may be opening again. Until then, we hope everyone stays safe, follows the Covid rules in place, and knows we look forward to art classes being available as soon as they can be done safely.

I've had some questions regarding where to find some of the art supplies that we used to carry at the shop. I'm not recommending one product over others, this is simply what we carried and used ourselves. For canvas...Art Alternatives were the brand we preferred, their blue label is the standard one and we think they are excellent. I know they are available from several different retailers, some of our ex-students ordered them online from a company they found through Google. For brushes...we sold Scharff brushes, and they have good quality at a fair price. We carried their line for at least 20 years, and still order from them, I think they probably have a page. For paint...Grumbacher is what we carried and still prefer. Their student grade is Academy, their professional grade is Pretest. Colors are consistent and mix well, we recommend the "soft" titanium white. Local stores carry mostly just the basics, for colors like Greenish Umber, which is wonderful, an online retailer is the best bet. Medium...odorless thinner, or one of the "naturals". Final varnish...Damaar is best. I hope this helps, any other questions I will be happy to respond. Happy painting!

Learning a little about the exciting things that will be happening at "Starr's".....They're working on a logo and the shop will soon have a bigger social presence online. I'm anxious to see it begin to happen!

Starr's Art & Collectibles will still be a part of the community after all! There will be a bigger frame shop with all the extras..... lights, mirrors,etc. and lots more to come. I'll be updating the information as things progress, but certainly stay tuned!

Tuesday-10a.m.-Noon
Wed.-1p.m.-3p.m.
Thurs.-2 p.m.-4 p.m.
