🎙️ STEAMi is on The Epic Classroom Podcast! 🎙️

We are so excited to celebrate Mrs. Cochran, who recently had the opportunity to join educator, author, and speaker Trevor Muir on his The Epic Classroom podcast!

Trevor visited STEAMi in August to work with our teachers during professional development focused on Project Based Learning, authentic learning, and creating meaningful experiences for students. He is also the author of several educational books, including The Epic Classroom.

In the episode, “When PBL Goes Beyond the Classroom,” Mrs. Cochran shares about Project Based Learning at Nettleton STEAM Intermediate and how students can use what they learn to make a real impact beyond the walls of the classroom. One project highlighted is a solar oven project that connected science standards such as thermal energy, conduction, convection, radiation, and heat transfer with an authentic opportunity to help others.

Trevor also featured the story on his blog and shared one of our favorite beliefs at STEAMi:

There’s a big difference between asking students to complete a project for just a grade and asking them to create something that can actually make a difference.

Mr. Willoughby’s 3rd and 4th grade art students are getting creative with technology! 🎨💻

Students recently created digital self-portraits, combining artistic skills with digital design. It was so much fun to see each student’s unique personality shine through their artwork. We love watching our STEAMers explore new ways to express themselves through art!

🎡 Third Grade Enrichment: Mr. Ferris’ STEM Challenge! 🎡

This week, our third graders stepped into the world of George Ferris as we read Mr. Ferris and His Wheel and learned about the creativity, problem-solving, and perseverance behind the original Ferris wheel!

Then it was time for our own STEM challenge!

Students were given only a wheel cutout, scissors, straws, and tape and challenged to design and build their very own Ferris wheel. But there was a catch…

*The wheel had to spin on its axle
*The structure had to stand freely on its own
*And they had to figure it all out using only the materials provided!

There were lots of “I think I have an idea!”, “Wait…why isn’t it spinning?!” and plenty of redesigning along the way.

I loved watching students test, problem-solve, collaborate, and most importantly, keep trying when their first design didn’t work. That’s what STEAM is all about!

Third grade engineers, you made Mr. Ferris proud!

STEAMi would like to congratulate Ruthie for being chosen to be part of the Delta Youth Symphony Orchestra! This is a huge honor, and she had to try out with a lot of students in our region. To be chosen at her age is phenomenal!!
