A-State and Texas Christian University (TCU) meet on the football field Saturday, but there’s also good work happening in the labs on both campuses.

Here at A-State, Dr. Argelia Lorence and her team are studying how beneficial soil fungi could help rice and wheat grow with less water and better withstand drought.

At TCU, Dr. Charles Freeman and researchers in the Athlete Equipment and Materials Design Lab are testing how clothing and wearable materials hold up to heat, sweat, and movement with potential benefits for athletes, first responders, and others.

Two different ways research can help solve everyday challenges. Glad to highlight the people behind this work at both universities!

Dr. Drew Fleming, associate professor of mechanical engineering, is co-editor of a special issue of the ASME Journal of Tribology which focused on orthopedics and biotribology, the multidisciplinary study of friction, wear and lubrication in biological systems. This issue collected 18 contributions ranging from materials development for implants to the contact mechanics of the human body. Dr. Cameron Wimpy, associate professor of political science and department chair, was selected by the Oxford Martin School at the University of Oxford as an Inaugural Fellow in the AI Upskilling for Social Scientists program, part of the Martin School’s AI Governance Initiative. Wimpy will study the relationship between AI and authoritarian politics and democratic backsliding. After online workshops, he will travel to Oxford in the fall for the program.

Dr. Alexandr Sokolov, assistant professor of engineering management and program director, has been named Fellow in the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM).

The designation is for individuals who have shown long‑term commitment to the Society and made exceptional contributions to the engineering management profession. Candidates must have at least eight years of ASEM membership and must show significant accomplishment in two key areas. Active ASEM Fellows make final selections after nomination reviews.
