These days, written audition instructions from many of the Southeast’s busiest casting directors often include notes to actors such as “…keep your auditions “grounded”, “natural”, “real”, and, “don’t over do it”.

What these casting directors are really saying is…please…STOP ACTING.

Most often, what we actors are asked is, “to portray life as it is lived on earth.” Our goal is simple; “…to be…believed”.
The most believable on-camera portrayals (performances) are imperceptible, seemingly effortless, and, most of all, honest. The performances we believe and, therefore, enjoy, are those where the actors don’t appear to be acting at all!

You are on your way toward better auditions and a more successful career when you embrace the ideal that your first and foremost goal as an actor is that the audience (the viewer) believes that you are the character you’re pretending to be.

When, in the midst of preparing for an audition, an actor’s primary goal becomes, “blowing away the competition” or even “booking the role” that actor can become prone to over-acting and, consequently, a dishonest, ungrounded, and, unnatural, performance. In fact, the very thought that your work should be (forgive me) a quid pro quo, a “performance” that requires anything other than the viewer’s “belief”, is enough to throw you completely off of your game.

When you make your objective simply “being believed”, you lay the ground work for a consistent and successful career in film and television.

For many of you, making it in this business means RESETTING YOUR PROFESSIONAL PRIORITIES, learning how to STOP PERFORMING, and, learning how to STOP ACTING.

This course is not about tricks or about mastering some magical new acting “technique”. It is, however, a practical and professional, common-sense approach to both the business and the art of acting for the camera based on my 25 years of ongoing success as Day Player, Guest Star, Strong Supporting, and Series Regular.
