Five years ago, on August 18, 2021, something very special happened in Coney Island. 🎨✨

Artists, organizers, and community representatives came together to celebrate the Coney Island Art Mural Project — a project that brought art into the streets and transformed public spaces through creativity, color, and collaboration.

I was honored to be one of the participating artists, creating murals inspired by fish and flowers. 🐟🌸

What made that day especially meaningful was the gathering of the artists and organizers, where we shared our experiences and memories of the project. We were also joined by an official representative supporting small businesses in Brooklyn, who personally met with the artists and thanked us for the contribution we made to the community.

Looking back five years later, I feel that this project was about much more than painting walls. It was about people coming together and leaving something beautiful behind — something that becomes part of the identity and memory of a neighborhood.

This is what I believe public art can do: connect people, give a place a voice, and turn a simple wall into a story.

And this spirit continues today through Art Studio Natalka Barvinok. We create murals and large-scale artwork for communities, businesses, events, and private spaces, bringing our experience, imagination, and love for meaningful art into every project.

UNDER A STARRY SKY ✨

Every meaningful artistic journey begins with a single spark of inspiration.

For me, that spark appeared during one of my Van Gogh–inspired workshops at Bottle Works Arts in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. As my students and I painted The Starry Night, a simple thought came to me:

What if Van Gogh’s magical sky continued its journey across the world?

That question became Under a Starry Sky—an ongoing series of oil paintings that reimagines beloved landmarks beneath a sky inspired by Vincent van Gogh.

The first painting had to be Bottle Works, because that is where this creative journey was born. Since then, the series has expanded to include Franklin Street United Methodist Church, the Statue of Liberty, Johnstown City Hall, DUMBO in Brooklyn, the bridges of Pittsburgh, and many more places still waiting to be painted.

At Natalka Barvinok Art Studio, we believe that art is more than creating beautiful paintings. We design inspiring workshops, develop original creative projects, and transform ideas into meaningful works of art. Every class, every project, and every new painting is an opportunity to inspire others through creativity.

We are also looking for galleries, art centers, cultural organizations, and exhibition spaces that would like to share this journey with their communities. We would love to bring Under a Starry Sky to new audiences through exhibitions, workshops, and collaborative art events.

Happy Independence Day, America. 🇺🇸

As an artist who found a second home in America, I see Independence Day as much more than a celebration of history. To me, it is a reminder that freedom is never simply given—it is entrusted to us.

My painting, “Self-Portrait,” reflects this thought. In my glasses, the Statue of Liberty and a seagull are mirrored. One symbolizes the ideals that inspire millions. The other represents the open horizon, the courage to cross oceans, and the freedom to choose one’s own direction.

I was born in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic and came of age during a time of profound historical change, witnessing the birth of an independent Ukraine. Those experiences taught me that freedom is never abstract. It shapes lives, choices, and destinies.

When I came to America, I brought not only my brushes and paintings, but also a deep appreciation for the opportunity to create, to speak honestly, and to dream without fear.

Yet true independence is not only a right—it is a responsibility.

It is the responsibility to protect truth when it is challenged.
To preserve compassion when the world grows divided.
To create rather than destroy.
To leave the world a little brighter than we found it.

Freedom begins long before it appears in constitutions or monuments. It begins within us—in every choice guided by conscience instead of fear.

Today, I celebrate not only a nation’s independence, but the human spirit’s enduring desire to remain free.

May we continue building a world where liberty is reflected not only in monuments, but in our actions, our kindness, and the way we see one another.

At Art Studio Natalka Barvinok, we are constantly working on new creative ideas, artistic explorations, and meaningful projects that connect art with human emotion, memory, and imagination.

One of these projects is my ongoing series Under a Starry Sky, born here in Johnstown through teaching, creativity, and inspiration shared inside our studio community. What began as a reflection on Van Gogh’s living skies has grown into a large artistic journey that continues to expand with every new painting.

This series reimagines meaningful places beneath dynamic, moving heavens — reminding us that no matter where we are in the world, we all live under the same stars. Through these paintings, familiar landmarks become filled with wonder, light, and a sense of connection between earth and infinity.

The project is continuing to grow, and all works from the Under a Starry Sky series are available for acquisition. We warmly invite you to visit our studio, experience the paintings in person, and become part of this artistic journey.
