Today, we are excited to share a glimpse into the creative process of our lead instructor, Anatoliy Omelchenko, as he works on his painting for Round 2 of the prestigious ART 64 live painting tournament in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.

ART 64 is one of the largest live bracket-style painting competitions in the United States, bringing together 64 artists from across the country to compete head-to-head in front of a live audience. Spectators vote for their favorite works as artists advance through each round, making it a unique celebration of creativity, skill, and artistic vision. This year, Anatoliy Omelchenko became the winner of the first round and advanced to the next stage of the competition.

Inspired by his passion for painting and decades of artistic experience, Anatoliy Omelchenko is now accepting students for Oil Painting Classes at Natalka Barvinok Art Studio.

Whether you are a complete beginner, an aspiring artist, or someone looking to deepen your creative practice, we offer both group and private lessons designed to help you develop your artistic skills and confidence.

One of these projects is my ongoing series Under a Starry Sky, born here in Johnstown through teaching, creativity, and inspiration shared inside our studio community. What began as a reflection on Van Gogh’s living skies has grown into a large artistic journey that continues to expand with every new painting.

This series reimagines meaningful places beneath dynamic, moving heavens — reminding us that no matter where we are in the world, we all live under the same stars. Through these paintings, familiar landmarks become filled with wonder, light, and a sense of connection between earth and infinity.

The project is continuing to grow, and all works from the Under a Starry Sky series are available for acquisition. We warmly invite you to visit our studio, experience the paintings in person, and become part of this artistic journey.

Today in our class at Art Studio Natalia Barvinok, we explored one of the most important foundations of academic drawing — the side view study of the skull and anatomical structure.

Many people think drawing is only about talent. But true academic drawing is much deeper than that. It is a powerful training for the brain, perception, concentration, memory, and analytical thinking.

When children and teenagers carefully study form from nature, observe proportions, compare angles, analyze light and shadow, and translate three-dimensional objects onto paper, complex neurological processes begin to develop. Scientific studies show that observational drawing activates both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously:the analytical mind learns structure and proportion, while the creative mind develops imagination, sensitivity, and artistic vision.

My painting “Meditation” was created from this idea — the search for harmony between the human soul and the endless movement of life around us. Through color, symbolism, and atmosphere, I wanted to capture that fragile moment when the mind becomes quiet and we begin to truly feel.
